So I looked up International Falls on imdb and Rachael Harris looked really familiar, so I looked her up. And that turned up Mike Tyson Mysteries, which gets an 8.2 on imdb and sounds totally weird. “retired boxing champion Mike Tyson, his brainy adopted Asian-American daughter, a friendly but wimpy gay gentleman ghost and a cursed perverse mean-spirited talking pigeon solve weird mysteries together” How did I not hear of that? I ordered season 1.
We enjoyed this as well. Monk is one of our go-to shows to rewatch when we don’t want to make the tough decision about what new thing we want to watch. I felt the case was way easier to solve than usual, but appreciate that they did a final reunion.
The Mike Tyson series looks to be animated with 4 seasons. Looks to be free on Spectrum, need to buy if using Apple TV, Amazon or Vudu.
The Man from Colorado (1948) - post-Civil War PTSD
It was on Adult Swim (late night) on Cartoon Network. I don’t think I ever watched it. It’s no Robot Chicken, after all.
The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones on Netflix. This is a bit older, maybe from 10 years ago. Lily Collins has the lead. This movie was made with the hopes of grabbing the coat tails of the Potter and Hunger Games franchises as well as The Maze Runner. Not nearly as good as any of these others. The director couldn’t find a way to join all of the pieces together into a coherent story and we are left wondering why some events happened and then had no impact on the story. One such example was when her friend Simon tried to save her from vampires and she finds two puncture wounds on him. No future mention of this at all.
May/December on Netflix. A weird one, the loose retelling of the Mary Kay Letourneau story 18 years later. Julianne Moore is the woman who was arrested for having sex with the 13 year old boy who she later married. Natalie Portman is an actress who is going to play the character in a movie and is trying to get a feel for the people involved so she can share a real sense of the story. The characters all seem to be unraveling as Portman’s character visits and spends time with them. Very tough watch and it wasn’t really clear to me what Todd Haynes (director) was trying to say.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom at the theater. Only about 2 hours long but felt twice that. No real need to make this one and they didn’t expend a ton of effort to make it interesting. It felt like it was wrapping up and I checked the time to see there was still another 30 painful minutes left. Watch it at home if at all.
Wonka at the theater. Saw this right after Aquaman and it was so much better. Timothee Chalamet was a great choice for Wonka. Didn’t expect him to sing, let alone 4 numbers, but he was pretty good at it. The story is the origin story for Willy Wonka. They pay the right amount of homage to the Gene Wilder version with the use of music and Hugh Grant as an Oompa-Loompa. He was a great casting decision. Very humorous and great for pre-teens to adults.
Watched some of “Love, Actually” on AMC. Martin Feeeman’s story was completely cut, as was the guy who goes to the states with his big knob.
So only five stories and not seven
Now watching It’s a Wonderful Life on Prime, uncut and no commercials.
Coincidentally, just finished watching It’s A Wonderful Life for the umpteenth time. I know it’s a bit mawkish but it always gets to me.
On the plus side, there was a lot less of the movie that you had to sit through.
Watching movies on AMC does not count as watching a movie
Agreed. I think we have a hard copy at home with all of it.
Watched all three Back to the Future movies because somehow my kids had never seen them. They enjoyed them all. The first is of course a classic, but the other two hold up pretty well imo. Really think this might be in the running for ‘best trilogy’. Had forgotten that they made 2 and 3 at the same time and released them just 1 year apart.
Weaselette has never seen this, so it’s on our list now. Possibly tonight.
best trilogies(+) no order

Sean of the dead
my top 10
debating the newer Planet of the Apes
and the Spiderman
Ohhh, nice list. Some others for consideration:
Three Colours
Toy Story
Original Planet of the Apes (because the 1st movie is sooo good)
thought of Colors, not the biggest fan
thought of the original PoA, but couldn’t remember anything much from the sequels or even how many there were and how many were good
Toy Story - great addition
I just thought of the Alien and Terminator movies, both really good for three, put both as a series over original Planet of Apes, maybe new ones too.
First three Mission Impossibles as well. Over Bourne, over Bond
Eh, first one is good; the fourth one is better, mainly because of Brad Bird. In between? Eh. After? Better than II and III, IMO.
a couple of nights ago, watched Leave the World Behind (Netflix). 2/5. In the end, did not like. I appreciate what was intended, but it was not a satisfying conclusion. I’m thinking these Netflix-produced movies (like Bird Box from a few years ago) are competent, but just rather meh and missing the next level of writing that typical Hollywood studios end up with.
last night (Christmas Eve), watched Die Hard, of course. 5/5 stars
tonight watched Taken from 2008. Surprisingly, I’ve never watched this. 4/5 stars. (what would make it better? well, for one, a more mortal main character - this dude kills like 47 while getting nary a scratch! at least McClane ended up battered and bruised and barely conscious at the end)
Maestro on Netflix. If you love movies and the way they are made and what a director is trying to do, you’ll probably love this one. If you don’t, you likely won’t. My first comment after watching today was that Bradley Cooper (director as well as lead) wanted the audience to work really hard to figure things out. The direction is as chaotic as Bernstein’s music from the film was. This theme follows throughout the movie. Oscar nomination worthy, but probably not wins.
The Quiz Lady on Netflix. Stars Awkwafina and Sandra Oh as two sisters who need to pay off mom’s gambling debt. The dog is also being held hostage to further encourage them. Awkwafina has been watching a game show for decades (hasn’t missed one) and Will Ferrell is the Alex Trebek type host. She needs to get on the show and win to get the money to pay off the debt. The real story is the re-connection between sisters after years. Starts off weak and slow. Pretty funny by the end.
