Last movie you've watched

Yes, i looked you up on Google yesterday.

This is some background they didn’t include, that i think they will need to. We’ll see how the sequel goes.

Army of Thieves on Netflix. This is a prequel or origin story for Dieter, the safe cracker, from Army of the Dead. It provides his background on an attempt to crack the 3 Hans Wagner safes in Europe (out of 4, the fourth is the safe in Army of the Dead). We get a lot of background on the safe maker and the relationship to the Wagner operas. I liked it but I think they spent too much time showing the slow moving gears and such as Dieter (Sebastien) tries to open each safe. Nice origin story though.

Night Teeth on Netflix. A bit of a turn on the vampire mythology. The humans and the vampires have arranged a truce in California, Boylston Heights to be precise. However, one vampire wants to ramp things up and his aides have one night to break the truce completely. There is much mayhem, a nice love story, mistaken identity, etc. If you like the vampire genre, this is pretty well done.

In for a Murder on Netflix. This is a Polish film and I used dubbing. It was pretty well done. The movie is a kind of Hallmark Movie whodunit. Magda, the woman at the center of the story, finds a dead girl in the park wearing the necklace of her best friend from years ago who mysteriously went missing. Magda is in a less than fulfilling marriage and her friend, the detective and his sister live next door. Nice little movie but not really more than Hallmark.

Ashby on Amazon. Mickey Rourke as a retired CIA assassin without much time left to live meets up and sort of mentors Nat Wolff in life, not assassinations. Nat is pining for Emma Roberts. Sarah Silverman id Nat’s mother. I enjoyed it as Rourke’s character has to face up to what he has done in his life as the days wind down. Wolff teaches Rourke as much as he learns. I enjoyed it.

Dune.
Enjoyed it for sure. Looking forward to part 2. Having read the book first helped I think.

Last Night in Soho at a real theater. Haven’t been to many lately. We were the only ones in the theater too. With all of the movies I am watching at home using subtitles, I really missed it in this movie. The British accents were really hard to deal with from a few characters. I don’t think I missed anything important, but it was mildly annoying.

I liked the story and the misdirect was effective. The basic story has a young woman moving to London to attend fashion college to become a designer. She has visions and sees ghosts including her dead mother. She moves into an older house and starts having visions of a woman from the late 1960’s who wants to be a singer. This woman meets a shady producer(?) who doesn’t have here best interest at heart. The young designer gets these visions as dreams every night and they start to haunt her waking hours too. The ending was a bit of a surprise but it worked for me.

She was dead the whole time??

You clearly do not have a sixth sense, good sir.

The Harder They Fall - This is on Netflix, a western and a predominantly black cast. You get some Idris Elba and LaKeith Stanfield. Throw in Regina King and Zazie Beetz, add Delroy Lindo and you get a great cast. If only they had a good story to tell and a director to tell it. Why would you use primarily reggae music in a western? No clue. This was a revenge story and the plot twist wasn’t hidden all that well. Not terrible, but if choosing between two movies, maybe choose the other one.

The Battle of The Bulge (1965).
Schlocky 60’s war movie. Some parts are accurate. Not sure what parts, though.

The Pit and the Pendulum with Vincent Price. More enjoyable than I expected. Loved the last few seconds.

Dune (HBO Max)- Finally got around to seeing this. Never read the books, don’t recall if I ever saw the earlier version. I found it rather dull and the it sort of just ended. I know there is a part 2 in the works for 2023, but, I probably won’t recall enough of this one and will have to rewatch.

Breaking News in Yuba County (Hulu) - New release with a great cast. You get Allison Janney, Mila Kunis, Akwafina, Reginal Hall, Wanda Sykes and Ellen Barkin. There are a few male actors in there as well, most notably Mathew Modine. It is listed as a comedy/crime drama. There is so much random death and destruction that it was probably not really a comedy, yet most of the remainder of the movie is pretty funny. Janney is a quite wife whose husband is having an affair(?). Can’t say much more without giving too much away, but Janney lies and the story takes on a life of its own with the mayhem that ensues. Enjoyed it more than I expected.

The Electrical Life of Louis Wain (Netflix) - Stars Benedict Cumberbacth in the titular role, based on a true story. He is an illustrator who almost single handedly turned cats from working animals to pets with his cartoons/drawings. He has a real hard time with people and when he finds a woman and marries, all seems to be going quite well. However, he can’t seem to run his own life, supports a boat load of sisters and his mother. A rather sad story with uplifting parts. Cumberbatch was excellent in this role.

Father Christmas is Back (Netflix) - Kelsey Grammar as a father of 4 girls/women who ran away from home years ago and returns for Christmas. Not a great movie, but it served its purpose and entertained. Includes John Cleese as his brother and Elizabeth Hurley as one of his daughters.

The French Dispatch (at the theater) - If you like Wes Anderson movies, you will probably love this one. If you don’t, then it will probably be a bit of a slog. The usual cast is employed as well as a few new faces. This movie is an homage to old time newspaper supplements. The movie focuses on three stories from the last edition of The French Dispatch. The three stories are all very different and some hit better than others. This may be the most Wes Anderson movie I have seen.

The Four of Us (Netflix) - Billed as a German comedy, that should have been a dead giveaway. Two couples have swapped partners a month ago and they get together to see how it went. As you might guess, not well. There was to be no sex between the couples, but both failed at that restriction. Possible pregnancy ensues and not in a funny way.

Alienated (Amazon) - She’s an alien, he’s a rocket scientist. They fall in love. What more can you say. Oh, the actress was really good, the actor was terrible. Odd to see such obvious disparity in the acting, even in a B-movie.

It was a bit all over the place. The style and pacing changed a lot as it went on. Even the music changed and was less frequent

The director was trying to be too slick at times. And I think he was trying to combine blaxploitation, spaghetti westerns and possibly comic book styles into an ultraviolent film, that didn’t fully
work

Luca (2021)

While it is totally predictable, it is well done and sweet.

Dune - was OK, I’ll watch the next one.

Shang Che - good martial arts fight scenes, especially the bus. But not w hole lotta plot.

Are familiar with the book? Or seen any prior incarnation of the story line?

I’m curious about the views of this movie from those who aren’t familiar with the overall story line.

Read the Book(s) years ago, have seen the prior Dune movies, original and remastered.

My daughter who is not familiar but wanted to watch because Zendya was in it was utterly lost.

About what age (if you don’t mind my asking; general age frame would be appreciated) is she?

Charlize Theron is something special as an actor!! I’ve watched most of her movies
