When Willie Comes Marching Home (1950): WWII silliness :expressionless_face:

“The Thursday Murder Club”
Interesting, tightly interwoven, not enough about the first murder they were trying to solve when the next murders start happening. Then, all of the (sic) sudden, voila! mystery solved!

Book Worm (2024 Prime) - After a freak accident leaves her mother in the hospital, her father who was a one night stand played by Elijah Wood, comes to watch her. Touching father daughter bonding movie set in New Zealand country. So Frodo gets to wander around Middle Earth again sort of.

sounds like a euphemism

The Roses at the theater. A remake of War of the Roses. Pretty well done, similar themes.
Bride Hard on Apple TV, don’t recall the price, maybe $5.99. Waited for home release and glad we did. Not a very good film but there was some fun in the mayhem.
Timestalker on Amazon. A woman chases the man she loves through time and reincarnation. Seems they are meant to be together, but she is always married to the wrong guy. As time goes by (centuries), she starts to recall earlier lives. Weakly executed, but a killer ending.
Eleanor the Great at the theater. One of my favorites this year. June Squibb is a wonder. She accidentally wonders into a holocaust survivors group and ends up relating her dead best friends experiences as her own. Very moving view of processing grief. Not well received on Rotten Tomatoes and it was ScarJo’s directorial debut.
Killing Mary Sue on Amazon. A senator with big ambitions tried to get his step daughter murdered since she is erratic and a political risk. Turns out she has mad skills and starts taking out hitmen left and right. Fun but not as well executed as it could be.
Inherent Vice on Amazon. This was a rewatch and was just the same the second time around. Very noir with Joaquin Phoenix as the drugged out detective.
A Big Bold Beautiful Journey at the theater. Very odd little film with Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie as lost souls who end up on a journey of discovery mostly through magic doors that their GPS directs them to. Not as highly rated as I would have thought, but I really liked it.
Play Dirty on Amazon. This is the new Mark Wahlberg movie that went straight to Prime. Lots of action as expected and it flowed pretty well.
The Ten on Amazon. On older one with a huge cast just before many had their breakouts. 10 short stories, one each based on the 10 commandments. Paul Rudd is the narrator, his wife is Famke Janssen. We get Jon Hamm, Adam Brody, Winona Ryder, Ken Marino, Ron Silver, Gretchen Mol, Jason Sudekis, Justin Theroux, Liev Schreiber, Jessica Alba, Oliver Platt, etc. They try to tie some of the short stories together, but it didn’t really feel like it worked.

Was that good or bad? It’s been a while since I saw it, but I’m pretty sure I watched it again right away, and I suppose my rewatch would have the same review.

I also read the book, but I don’t remember which was first. But it did put some more Pynchon on my to-read list.

It was exactly what it should have been. Pretty bad, but in a good noir way I think. Phoenix played the lead perfectly. I think I read the book too and as I recall, the movie is pretty spot on. I enjoyed it FWTW.

I watched this on Monday night. I thought it was great! Had a bunch of laughs.

Frankly, I thought it was way better than Top Gun: Maverick. I know, that puts me in the 0.1% of the population, but from an overall story standpoint, HG2 is miles ahead of TG:M. I am probably going to re-watch it (HG2, not the other one) and write up a blog post about it.

Haven’t seen HG2, but I thought TG: Maverick was pretty bad. Story was meh and way too unbelievable. Much worse than the original imo.

The Substance - HBO. What is you could be a better you? This is a hard movie to watch. Interesting concept and reasonably well executed but not for the squeamish.

But the ending was just plain silly.

Crazy, Stupid Love - somehow had never seen it. was ok.

David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived - documentary about David Holmes. He was Daniel Radcliffe’s stunt double on the HP movies until he had an accident practicing a stunt for 7.1 and was left paralyzed. He seems impressive in how he has lived and managed since the accident. The other two young stunt double dudes he came up with are also pretty impressive. Radcliffe (who was the producer) seems like a good friend.

One Battle After Another (Theaters). Reasonably funny and well-acted, although I suspect the political leanings are going to be off-putting to many. I wouldn’t say it’s anything you need to rush out to see in theaters.

I just watched this. Yeah, the funniness is pretty much from them doing and saying things you wouldn’t expect in a movie with puppets. There’s really not much else to the movie. It’s obvious and over the top and, despite being crude and lewd, feels like a Muppet movie. So I’d think whether you’d like it just depends on whether that’s enough for you to enjoy the movie. It’s one of those movies you know isn’t good, but still can enjoy. Maya Rudolph was really good in a smaller role as, I suppose, a kind of Effie from Maltese Falcon. She’s funny from mostly playing it very straight.

Rewatched The Godfather out of respect for Diane Keaton’s passing. Amazing how this movie sucks you in even after you have seen it several times. Couldn’t stop watching it and quickly followed it with Part 2.

Keaton, Pacino and De Niro are so young: great performances.

Roofman at the theater. This is based on the true story of a guy who robbed a lot of fast food restaurants by breaking in through the roof. He got caught and got 45 years in prison because they said it was 3 kidnapping charges for locking 3 employees in the walk in freezer. He figures out how to break out and settles in to a Toys 'R Us (story is from 2004). The story real begins here. Pretty interesting, but so many plot holes I was distracted. Nice roles for Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst though.

Good Fortune at the theater. Aziz Ansari, wrote, starred and directed this little picture. You also get a strong performance from Seth Rogen and a weird one from Keanu Reeves as an angel who get out of his lane. Lots of humor and a pretty solid statement about a ton of social issues. They don’t smack you in the face too much, but they stayed with me for a while.

Happy Death Day
Time loop murder thing. Really good, creative take on the repeat-a-day premise. Wasn’t a fan of the twist at the end. Kinda ruined it imo.

There’s a sequel as well. Not as good as the first but still enjoyable for me.

Tron: Ares - fun watch

Truth & Treason - well-done, serious, thought- provoking tale of WWII Nazi control of the German public

Probably seeing this tomorrow.
