Is inflation back?

No eggs at Costco yesterday, but my regular grocery store had them…they didn’t have “regular” eggs. “cage free” was the most basic variety offered. They did have some sort of mega pack [redtext]which came with interest free financing for six months[/readtext].

I’m more along the lines of, I make a good salary and have reasonably comfortable in life. I can avoid an extra $3 to $4 every few weeks to a month or so for chickens to have a more pleasant life.

You know inflation is high when you see stuff like this…

I’m just trying to picture someone sneaking around the chicken coop grabbing 100,000 eggs out from under the chickens and not getting caught.

I’m guessing it was something more boring like they were stolen out of a warehouse.

Article says stolen out of the back of a truck (lorry).

My question is not the stealing, it is the fencing. How the heck do you sell 100,000 eggs if you are not a distributor already?

Good question. So the question actually is: Who needs that many eggs to buy right now?
And how did the two get together? The buyer would seemingly be a legitimate business.
The stealer would have, logistically, lined up the buyer.
Occam’s Razor tells me that another egg-laying company or distributor is the buyer.

Another possibility, though more remotely:
Breakfast Chains: IHOP, Waffle House, Denny’s, or the egg source for these companies. Smuggle them in to the USA.

Anyway, time to rename Aesop’s fable to “the chickens are laying eggs worth gold” or something like that.

I suspect there’s probably many someones out there who have lists of restaurants and stores that are willing to buy cut rate products if they should somehow happen to become available.

That starts to become a conspiracy.
A distributor would have a list of customers who need eggs. Just blend the stolen eggs in with what they have.
A distributor who has agreed to supply eggs but doesn’t have any would be a prime suspect IMO. This distributor would also not have a contract to purchase eggs, putting the squeeze on them.

When Waffle House stops their surcharge, you’ll know where they went.

Get a stall at the farmers market

A dozen handpicked eggs for $10

Today at Costco, only shell eggs available were organic. $6.00/dz, limit 3. The sign said 3 eggs, but I think they mean 3 packages.

At my Costco yesterday they had the 3-package limit, but the organic ones were $3.99/dozen

New article I saw on the egg heist called the $40,000 the “street value.”

Comment from FB on the story:

Never thought I’d hear about eggs with the description “street value”

Got 18 eggs at Costco for $6, pretty nice compared to what I’m seeing elsewhere.

I declined to purchase at $6 a dozen. Bought at $4.12/dozen elsewhere. Organic.

Eggs in Canada are now cheaper vs US

US inflation going the wrong way. And will only get worse after tariffs are introduced. US interest rates not coming down anytime soon.

Eggs have now crossed the $8/dozen mark in the US

I paid $4 / dozen this morning. Prices vary regionally b/c they are driven more by bird flu related shortages than fundamental inflation.

Most recent egg purchase was at Trader Joe’s for $3.49 for a dozen, limit one.
