I think this qualifies, even though there is no confirmation the original posts existed
In the movie Runner Runner, Timberlake’s character is telling Affleck’s character that his poker website ripped him off and he has the math the prove it:
“I ran a multimodal sample distribution at the Plasma Physics Lab in Princeton. These numbers are negative 3 sigma, that means that they fall substantially below the standard deviation.”
That scriptwriter never took a stat class.
…sigh…they could have at least stuck the landing
“Yes, Coach Harbaugh . . .”
Gotta read the fine print for that one. ![]()
Real Trumpian headline here:
From the article:
Where is the innumeracy?
That it allows people not to believe it?
That belief is relevant for a mathematical fact?
That it is labeled a “terrible map”?
That some idiot on Facebook --but I repeat myself – thinks it is eye-opening?
Quick Google shows this as a “terrible map” result:
The innumeracy is in the words “Believe it or not”
And who, if anyone, included that? Was it jokingly or serious?
So much non-information here.
It probably was jokingly but I put it here anyway for all the amazed people out there
I’m glad I mostly remember this crap from high school. Also, because my kids are in these classes learning this crap now.
Last night’s lesson was finding equations in standard form based on a given vertex and point.
I feel your pain. I’m on math and/or physics duty pretty much every night this fall.
Recursion alert.
There are “amazed people out there”?
It also messed up the TV reception.
