Innumeracy

That belongs in the Random Thoughts thread, nothing to do with Innumeracy.

Perhaps not strictly innumeracy, but I expected it to be rounded to the nearest 100th.

I think that’s just how they report these times. You don’t get credit for 9.78 unless you are actually there or below. Like the opposite of Price is Right.

Similar to batting averages. You don’t get to say you batted .400 if you batted 0.3996.

Agree… round to the worse result. If low is good then round up. If high is good then round down.

That isn’t necessarily innumeracy, maybe they just want to surprise you.

Here’s a new twist on the subject

Seems more a candidate to mock their spelling/grammar . . .

“The number of cars on the road in Ethiopia is still quite low, about 1.2 million in total — or one car per 1,000 people.”

TIL the population of Ethiopia is 120 million people. That’s so much bigger than I would have thought. The above calculation was off by a factor of 10.

So is there 1 car for every 100 people?

Or 120,000 cars?

I need to go over THERE and deliver groceries… I could make a FORTUNE

They said there are about 100,000 EVs, so I assume the 1.2 million cars was accurate - they just messed up the calculation

From some clickbait ‘article’ on FB about biggest movie flops ever:

"When Disney bough Lucasfilm. a new Indiana Jones was always on the cards [sic]. The studio assumed fans would gladly line up to see Harrison Ford play the adventurer on last time.

This didn’t turn out to be the case. Having reportedly cost $326 million to make, 2023’s ‘Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny’ earned just $384 million, losing $143 million."

Looks like a $58 MM gain.

here’s what Screen rant has to say about that. $134.2 million loss.
