Yeah I find Heineken very skunky and don’t like it. Heineken 0.0 is not my favorite but it’s reasonably drinkable and I haven’t found it skunky.
I can appreciate that someone might call Heineken 0.0 a bit skunky. It smells pretty pungent, although I don’t think it tastes too much so.
It seems that skunked beer happens when certain types of beer are exposed to ultraviolet or artificial light. You might need to try it from a different vendor or try it from a can.
To avoid skunked beer, consider purchasing canned beer, as aluminum cans effectively block out light. If you prefer bottled beer, ensure that it is not displayed or stored in direct sunlight, and store it in a dark, cold place or the fridge as soon as possible.
it has always had a skunkiness. as a younger person I could not drink it. doesn’t bother me as much now (and I only would drink the 0.0 version of it now - can’t imagine a scneario where i’d order the regular heineken)
Most craft beer and in particular an IPA will get a skunky aroma in just a few minutes of you have it in a clear glass out in the sun on a summer day.
Interesting. I wonder if that’s the reason lagers are so popular in Australia. They have plenty of sunny days.
That one I believe is a bit more complicated…you could say the same was true about lagers in the US until around 2000. As was pointed out in the Jimmy Carter thread, his administration made homebrewing legal in the US. Being able to brew a good beer is not something that happens overnight…you need a viable market for ingredients for them to become available locally, you need people to understand the process well enough to craft a drinkable beer (which takes weeks per batch) and innovation to move it beyond what is commercially available.
That’s the history in the US and connects to the development of the craft beer market in the late 90s-2000s. I know nothing about the laws in Australia, but two other factors potentially at play. Water is less abundant in Australia (lots used by homebrewing to cool wort) and hops tend to require fairly specific growing conditions (primarily in the Yakima valley in NW of the US). The cost hurdle is going to be a lot higher as a result.
Have a plan ready ahead of time to commit to this so you can so no to yourself after 2 if that is your goal.
On the few months of no drinking, plan to do a lot of the things you might normally do with a drink so that you can gain a perspective of what it’s like to participate in those activities without alcohol. One data point I had before I quit was around golf…if I went out with coworkers or friends, I often had a fair amount to drink, while when I golfed with my dad, we were there just for the golf and time spent together. I really appreciated those rounds a lot more than the hazy ones I had with others. That observation carried over to a lot of other experiences once I quit.
That’s a good idea - I got the Sunnyside app. Disc golf is always beer drinking. Homebrew club will be the tough one. But I got a lot of NA beers available.
I talked with my brothers to join me as well. I saw their drinking problem this weekend and talked with them.
Found a very nice NA - Deschutes Kernza. It’s marketed as the first organic NA craft beer in the US. It’s made from kernza - a wheatgrass that is very similar to wheat but is a perennial, so it ends up having deep roots. Reminds me of some of the lagers (alcoholic) I drank in Germany.
My local brewery, Starr Hill makes Parallel NA. I like it
Uncool is also a local one - they’re doing a ton of fruity flavors that are pretty good (the fruity makes it taste less like beer though)
Skip the Hillary 0.0 Citra. Tastes like bad hop water.
Also, holy shit - Been “sober” for 10 days now. (I get 2 beers a week)
Exercising almost daily (Vshred or Run)
Got some mushroom drink mix I put in my coffee (Laird superfood)
Eating more fruits and veggies
Mini T-2 is back from a months worth of travel.
Nice work! My diet improved and I started walking/running daily when I quit. I think once you are feeling better consistently it becomes self motivating to want to do more of it.
I had an officer homebrew club meeting tonight and there was plenty of homebrews to share. I did not have a drop to drink. I did have cravings and it got chaotic (a lot of people like to talk over each other and bring up a totally different topic). So I took a 5mg gummy to help me cool down.
Next up - T-roy posts in the Improved Health and Lifestyle from Quitting Gummies thread.
I get it! Its THC vs stupid-o-pams though.
Anyone in your club attempting to brew an “NA” beer yet?
I had plenty a variety of NA beers in stock. They at least tried them. One guy did say “That’s probably a good idea for all of us”. We’ve all tried to make an NA beer. They can be dangerous and full of harmful pathogens if not stored correctly tho.
At a brew day, where there were about 5 people brewing, I took the spent grain and attempted to make a “low alcohol beer”. It was a dump beer after about 2 weeks. Noone really drank it, it wasn’t very good, and I started to worry about the infection thing.
