ICE, ICE baby

There is some reason to think that the government used ChatGPT in one of their filings. They “directly” quote the SCOTUS opinion, but instead of copy / paste from the opinion, their quote has completely different wording that means something crucially different.

ChatGPT or Grok?

This initiative is such a great example of what now constitutes “analysis” by the GOP. So depressing.

We hypothesized that vaccines cause autism, and indeed, it turned out that an undeniable majority of autistic people are vaccinated. QED.

No, they no-assed it (or full-assed it, because I don’t know which term means they didn’t try at all)

full no-ass as instructed by their own bosses. playing fully in the space where (1) any delay is to their favor and (2) daring he judge to take the step of holding them in contempt bc they aren’t afraid of that step.

Related, a really interesting rabbit hole on immigration… the Mariel boat lift. When tens of thousands of Cubans showed up in Miami in 1980 (I think), we got a nice natural experiment. Many were expecting a significant disruption to the labor market.

And what happened is the subject of much debate, but most economists agree that the impact was small. Most of the Cubans were in the low skilled labor class of worker. But even looking at that sector, wages didn’t drop. Unemployment for the existing workers didn’t shoot up.

It’s been a while since I’ve read about it. Some speculated that the Cubans didn’t just bring a supply of labor, but they also came with a demand for goods.

It’s confusing to me, though. They’re getting their asses handed to them in court decisions, even if the Trump admin is openly defying court decisions. They’re risking being disbarred or otherwise disciplined and people like Sydney Powell probably won’t work again outside of MAGAsphere lawsuits over voting machines and other batshit cases. Is the government paying our lawyers exceptionally well to stall the courts, or what is the motivation?

they will be held harmless i suspect. they would not be in this spot without loving the flavor of the kool-ade. they won’t face criminal charges (hello, pardons).

could they face professional blow-back (disbarrment)? maybe. but powell/lin wood et al were disbarred for providing knowingly false shit to the courts and initiating the actions frivolously with non-legal intent. these bobos are performing exactly as their client asked them to under the novel legal theory that the executive branch can do whatever it wants. failing to provide info is not as bad as providing knowingly false info.

and at the end, if they lose their law license they probably will make money in some talking head way or other grifty thing where they will be fine.

Garcia’s wife and family had to move to a safe house after the government publicly posted their home address.

Smart move by her. I’d put money that at least her home gets vandalized, if not violently broken into after the government doxxed her.

Do we think this was actually just incompetence, or willful malice? I can’t decide, stupidity and stupid hatred are both equally possible.

My money is on the government simply not bothering to think about it, or simply not caring.

I could see that interpreted as both incompetence and malice… but I do think it’s a simple hypothesis that doesn’t need a particular motivation or lack of skill. An extension of Occam’s Razor would suggest it as a most likely answer.

I think at some point an innocent person is going to make a run for it before getting arrested, and then getting shot and killed and then there will be riots.

I don’t understand how some officials have dodged contempt findings so far

If your average entrant into the labor pools is low wage and comes with a family of dependants, they create an aggregate demand on low cost goods and services that effectively nets out with the wage earned. That is probably a better result than low wage workers that mostly send money back to families out of the country.

It might even create the need for a new manager or two at those businesses, or even the need to expand operations. That sounds like more profit for business owners.

That’s a good point.

The comments on the story on Twitter are unhinged. They are claiming the guy was paid to do this. My impression based on the story is that ICE was browbeating a person with an intellectual disability and got him to confess to what they wanted him to confess to. Seems like an easy target.
