Hundreds of judges around the country have ruled more than 4,400 times since October that President Donald Trump’s administration is detaining immigrants unlawfully, a Reuters review of court records found.
The decisions amount to a sweeping legal rebuke of Trump’s immigration crackdown. Yet the administration has continued jailing people indefinitely even after courts ruled the policy was illegal.
“It is appalling that the Government insists that this Court should redefine or completely disregard the current law as it is clearly written,” U.S. District Judge Thomas Johnston of West Virginia, an appointee of President George W. Bush, wrote last week, ordering the release of a Venezuelan detainee in the state.
Whaaat? I thought that was the party f law and order.

n=1 anecdote, if I may.
I got to talk at length with my Latina SIL who is a recent naturalized citizen for the first time in a while.
She and my (white) brother aren’t very political people, but to the extent they are they lean mildly MAGA. They’ll both say things like “there’s too much gay stuff on TV nowadays”, etc. They’re a little “both sides bad” but certainly don’t mind most of MAGA agenda.
My SIL made some comments about how she “did it the right way” and it’s not right that these people should be “given free money”, and it was bad that Biden had “open borders”.
However, she also made some comments about how what Trump was doing was wrong and cruel. She said that Obama deported more people than Trump ever did, but Obama wasn’t trying to hurt mothers and children.
She mentioned Liam, the 5-year-old and how that broke her heart.
She mentioned she gets nervous when her daughter speaks Spanish in public, and she’s gotten some dirty looks from people.
She said if she got detained by ICE, “I’d probably be OK because I’m a citizen, but I could just disappear for a week or two and your brother wouldn’t know where I am and would have to take care of our baby alone.” But if her toddler was detained by ICE, she wouldn’t know what to do.
I mostly just listened; it was nice that she was feeling safe to verbalize these things. I pushed back on a few topics - for example, mentioning how immigrants bolster Social Security by paying into it, but not being eligible to receive benefits. She seemed to be tabulating that against her feelings that undocumented people are a drain on the system, but I didn’t try to turn it into a debate.
Only one viewpoint but it was pretty interesting. Not many of my MAGA-leaning family are willing to actually engage in conversation.

ICE confiscated the writings of kids after they complained to propublica about their lives in US prison camps.
Reading the stories, it sounds like the kids get access to learning materials. It’s unclear if they have access to toys. It’s awful how badly the US people treat kids in concentration camps.

The “US people” in charge don’t see them as kids. They will only do the minimum required to prevent media outrage, like not put them in animal cages.

The Boss announces a tour, dates are very soon, unlike most tours that are announced 6-8 months in advance.
Cities picked have been invaded by terrible criminals, the worst: ICE.
One night in Sunrise FL, as close to Mar a Lardo as one can get. Last night is outdoors in DC.
Most notable, IMO, is snubbing a performance at the venue formerly known as “The Kennedy Center”.
Not sure he has a reason to play there.

The question to ask first is: does the friend have any interest in spending several hours undergoing secondary screening at the border?
Several years ago, my wife and I had a couple hours’ extra delay coming home from Québec, after she made a point, while stopping at duty free, to go lean against the US-Canada border monument and smoke the Cuban cigar I objected to her attempting to smuggle in.

Related, I never smuggle. When I cross the border, I declare everything, I have the value to the penny. best case I go through scott free. Sometimes I pay less than I should. Worst case I pay the actual taxes owing. And any interactions are pleasant.
If I don’t declare, worst case is a lot worse. And the Interactions I imagine won’t be pleasant.
I’m militant about and I get mocked, but I have had my car pulled apart and challenged and they didn’t find anything. That wouldn’t have been fun.

The biosecurity guy at Sydney airport was impressed(?) when I came through his lane having checked yes to all 6 categories of things they were checking for. He hadn’t seen that in a few years. The drugs were Tylenol, the food was chocolate.
