ICE, ICE baby (and CBP stuff too)

Go sit in China for a month, then sit in the US for a month, then tell me which you found more authoritarian.

Trump would love to do it in the US, but institutions are slowing him down a lot. There are no such institutions in China, no free press, no freedom of association, no presumption of innocence.

Yes the US has problems, but step back and its patently absurd to say it’s as bad as China right now. Maybe jn 20 years.

I’ll caution against using that as the standard.

Beijing is more authoritarian than Washington. However, I would venture a guess that the average American is more aware of the manifestations of Washington’s burgeoning authoritarianness than the average Han Chinese citizen is of Beijing’s authoritarian nature.

Beijing controls its media, so there isn’t media coverage of the government thugs disappearing people, for example. The Great Firewall and online censorship exist, but my impression is that for the average resident…those constraints aren’t a factor.

An American visitor to mainland China would probably be more aware of perceiving Beijing’s authoritarian nature, but I wonder how much of that awareness would be driven in part by their usual online resources being blocked by the Great Firewall, and part of that being hyperaware of the presence of government authority, partly due to the effects of not having local ID (e.g. having to go through passport control to board a train, because you can’t tap your way through an automated barrier) and partly due to having been programmed to be aware due to American media.

I already find the US more authoritarian than Canada. So many armed police officers everywhere and god forbid you get a speeding ticket in a small town, particularly the south.

Lol, now compare that to China…

Im surprised trump hasnt tried to take on ms. Rachel yet.

Judge in Chicago is apparently saying in court that shooting prayer leaders with pepper balls and tear gas without warning is a violation of their first amendment rights.

So, the 1st Amendment is still in force?
TIL.

US banning fat people from getting visas. Seems a bit ironic…

i’m surprised the rule isn’t more carefully worded as “no fatties” or “no fat chicks”

Delayed take:

That’s a great quote and motto for people that are being offended, but I find that the people who often say things like this are those doing the offending, and it’s not such a great motto for them.

Essentially, they are both making stupid jokes/personal remarks AND suggesting that if the target gets offended, they are stupid. Win-win.

Also, reacting to offensive remarks by distancing yourself from those making those remarks, when you know you’ll get the kind of reaction like “you’re just over-sensitive”, I believe, is smart, not foolish.

I must be a fool, I guess!

We live in a country where people are now openly bragging about making false race based accusations.

The president of Boston University College Republicans wrote on X he called the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement requesting it detain employees at Allston Car Wash, the site of a Nov. 4 raid where nine employees were arrested.

“As someone who lives in the neighborhood, I’ve seen how American jobs are being given away to those with no right to be here. Pump up the numbers!” Segal’s post concludes.

The nine detained employees all had work permits, Allston Car Wash Manager Jose Barrera told Boston.com.

Barrera said around 22 federal agents arrived at the Cambridge Street car wash holding subpoenas, but agents began arresting employees before they could retrieve their documents from the locker room, Barrera told Boston.com.

That guy’s made a lot of enemies at a young age.

Confirms my suspicion that petty sociopathic racist a-holes are calling ICE with no evidence at all of illegal activity.

It wouldn’t surprise me if he relishes having made a lot of enemies in this.

If he’s been calling ICE for months, then the company has had time to get different employees.

Or the employees were kosher all along, but the sociopath was just acting in the bigoted belief that all brown people doing manual labor are illegal.

100%. having those enemies bolsters his chances of having more opportunities with the a-holes he aspires to join.

Coincidentally(?), the author of this piece was arrested the next day protesting ICE.

A 45-year-old Riverside County man, who reportedly works as a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent, is accused of illegally detaining a minor at gunpoint while off duty last week.

The Nov. 10 incident, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, played out at around 10:30 pm outside a home in the 32000 block of Daybrook Terrance in Temecula.

Lawyer Greg Kirakosian, who represents the boy and his family, told KTLA that the 17-year-old was driving home after dropping a friend off down the street when he saw the suspect, identified by investigators as Gerardo Rodriguez, pointing a gun at his vehicle, demanding he pull over.
