I heard he was a Nazi
The first time I visited Chile in the 1980s, the locals told me of a city in southern Chile that Chileans were warned not to visit. The story was that it was inhabited almost totally by Nazis who fled Germany right after WWII and they didn’t want visitors.
He is descended from one basically.
Was briefly looking into this (just doing some research for a Peru trip next year) and the swing to the right from the current left-wing government was caused by immigration (Venezuelans) and a crime wave from ineffective policing.
Latin America seems to have very few centrist parties due to higher levels of inequality. Its either far right or far left. Very little in between so the parties go back and forth in terms of power (with sub-optimal long-term results).
