I don't get why we want to bring the factories back

Yes, what do you think the purpose of K-12 is…???

Daycare?

So factory workers don’t need to know how to read, write, do some math, and all that other stuff? Only desk workers do?

A fairly high percentage of office workers are incompetent or just barely competent, and many have had formal training for years or decades.

No, I don’t believe most factory workers could be retrained to do office work, I’m just going to be the one to actually say it.

I’m gonna betray my own ignorance, but I would think being a mechanic in robotics would be one of the few jobs in the place.

No, I’m saying the point of K-12 is to learn to sit at a desk all day

Do you actually believe that?

Do they let some of the kids stand up now that there are standing desks in the workplace?

Factories in the US are pretty heavily automated because labour is so expensive. I’d think most of the jobs are when the factory gets built…

Incompetent or just don’t care about their jobs?

I’m bet there was a time when mass literacy campaigns were controversial because people were considered too stupid to be able to read and that you couldn’t possibly teach it to everyone.

And then there’s facebook.

No, that would be too accommodating, and a show of weakness

Actually there was a time like this. Your point being? That everyone should have desk jobs? I don’t know how anyone can say this with a straight face tbh

Not everyone just doesn’t care. Sometimes it’s actually harder for people. And sometimes it being harder feeds into people giving up and not caring.

I just needed a placeholder for an abstract X. The US has lots of X’s that it’s good at globally and the types of factory jobs Trump and his supporters want back are definitely not X.

One argument is that people need those factory jobs because not everyone can be X because, well, there are too many stupid people who are incapable of being those Xs so they must toil away in a steel mill in order to earn a living.

I don’t think that’s true and we can certainly do a better job transitioning people to the multitude of Xs that we have available that are superior to those factory jobs.

There are people who enjoy being active in their job. You may not be one of them, but they are out there.

Now admittedly, physical jobs take a toll and maybe we have earlier retirement for those, but that doesn’t mean some people aren’t happier being active in their jobs.

Oh, and? I don’t see it as a question of people being stupid. It’s a question of what people will least hate - or - even - maybe - actually like a little.
