Have you considered something like this?
That would definitely allow me to push it back further on the shelf. I’ll consider it.
But I need to read up on whether that’s actually a good idea given the aforementioned heat issue?
Yeah, I used to do it for one car, and doing it the old fashioned way wasn’t too bad. But for FOUR cars? You can totally justify an impact wrench, imo.
Did I already post this? Maybe. I bought a Chef’s Choice knife sharpener. 11/10, would recommend.
I have a Chef’s Choice sharpener for Asian knives, which is what most of my knives are. And I like it, too. But I’ve used it to sharpen a few Swiss knives, which the instructions say to definitely NOT do.
I haven’t noticed anything obviously horribly wrong with either the knives or the sharpener though. ![]()
Isn’t the difference just the angle? Asian knives are cut at shallower angles than European or American knives, I think. I got the ‘European’ model or whatever because my knives are Henckels. I do have a santoku knife (also Henckels) and I sharpen it. I honestly don’t know how it was ground at the factory. I figure if it was ground at a shallower angle, I’d be converting it. Seems fine.
Yes, I think the biggest difference that would affect the sharpening is the angle.
I think European tends to be made of softer metal which means they need more frequent sharpening but are less prone to damage. Asian blades are harder and require less frequent sharpening but would more easily be damaged if dropped.
Mine is like 15 years old, and I’ve repaired it. But yeah, i wouldn’t have tried to repair twig’s.
Enjoy the new microwave, twig.
So roughly 48 hours in, and I haven’t used it that much but it’s noticeable that the old microwave was 1,200 watts and the new microwave is only 1,000. It takes longer to cook things. Not a super big deal, but I notice it more than I thought I would.
Specifically, my breakfast took 45 seconds in the old microwave and I’ve needed to add more time both mornings with the new one. Once I can consistently remember to just set it for 55 seconds or a minute it’ll be fine. I don’t care about the 15 seconds, but the taking it out and then realizing it’s not done and putting it back in is annoying. So it’s just going to take some getting used to is all.
You can spend that extra 15 seconds marveling at the extra inch of space in front of the microwave that you now have in your kitchen.
I’ll put a nice set of knives on my list now TYVM
Anyone else now really curious what @twig93 is heating in the microwave for breakfast every day? All I can think of is oatmeal…
maybe some jimmy dean
Henckels and Wusthoff are the usual recommendations, Shun is nice but more $$$. Get the ones made in Germany. I have the Henckels Four Star, which we bought in 2001 and they are still as good as new. I think the Four Star, Twin Four Star, or Gourmet are all perfectly cromulent. Just different handles, basically, all the same forged German steel - the blade thickness may vary slightly between them.

Yes. I’ve occassionally made oatmeal in the microwave, but I would describe that as “making” or “cooking” oatmeal, not as “heating up my breakfast”.
I usually have cereal with milk for breakfast, so I don’t heat my breakfast. And I don’t have a good sense of what sort of breakfasts one might heat up.
I have a Wusthoff and a Henkels paring knife. I’ve had then for a couple of decades. And one is better than the other. It’s easier to sharpen and stays sharp longer. But the markings have worn off, and I don’t know which it is. (And what they are selling now may not be the same as what they sold back then. Both companies make several lines of knives, after all.)
Both are better than a couple of other brands of paring knifes I’ve purchased. And both are very different, but not better, than the Global knives. Global is another brand to consider. It’s excellent, but feels different from most knives. You need to decide what feels good in your hand. It’s not just about the blade. Shun also feels very different. I believe that the blades are excellent, but I don’t care for the handles, so I haven’t bought any.
I thought it was only 2/7 of an extra inch?
I have a hard time buying a $30 polo. How TF am I going to justify a $400 set of 7 knives! UGH!
Buy quality, cry once.
I don’t know if knives are being faked these days, when I bought my set I was in grad school and on a budget and I got them on eBay for about 30% less than anywhere else I could find them.
