I thought you said earlier that you didn’t think we could wipe it out because of how easily it passes between humans and animals. Am I misremembering what you said?
I think the search functionality works better here than it did on AO.
Fewer, but not none.
We can’t eradicate it, but we can drive it to irrelevance. Especially since our seems it’s unusual to catch it from critters. (Probably related to being unusual to catch it outdoors.) I never worry about catching German measles. Every so often there’s a little outbreak of whooping cough, but then more people get vaccinated and it goes away again.
It goes away again before more people get vaccinated (or simultaneously, before the effects of their vaccinations really effect lower transmission rates).
Hey, I didn’t have a cold at all this last winter. That’s pretty awesome.
There is a lot of space between endemic (regularly found among certain people or in a given region) and eradicated.
I think that is the confusion that you are having with Lucy’s statements.
Yes, an endemic disease is always simmering, you probably know someone who had it recently
(of a disease or condition) regularly found among particular people or in a certain area.
We’ve only eradicated one disease (smallpox) although several others have been eradicated in some countries, and an outbreak rarely is imported. But we’ve driven lots of diseases to irrelevance.
Tetanus can’t be eradicated. It lives in the soil. We can’t eradicate it without sterilizing the entire earth. But tetanus deaths are incredible rare due to vaccination.
Ok, fair enough.
I went to a Monster Jam show this weekend. Not planned. Masks required, very limited seating. I surprised myself by wanting to go though. I expected to not want to subject myself to crowds for at least another year.
I had COVID at some point in the past, and I’ve been double-vaccinated. I’ll still wear masks around people whom I do not know, simply because people with COVID and are contagious don’t know it for several days until symptoms present. And the vaccines are not 100%, as Bill Maher recently discovered.
Just got back from a wine pickup. Wine Country (Central Coast) has its share of Trumpsters (some waving flags on an overpass on the way home), but I’m still thinking of retiring up there. We went to one local restaurant, our masks on, and no one working there had a mask on, and this was in SLO County which is still in the “orange” tier. At least four times the lady at the counter told us we didn’t have to wear our masks. (Maybe she just wanted to hear us better. Place was blasting loud, shitty, country music. The food was not that good, either. And Pepsi dispensers, bleh.) I usually think to myself, “Well, I don’t know where you’ve been, and you don’t know where I’ve been.” Our two tastings were outdoors, and we joined an indoor discussion of currently-barreled wines that the vintners allowed us to taste. Total of nine people in an airy high-ceilinged warehouse (no masks). I felt safe, somewhat buzzed.
I’ve been to 3 outdoor sporting events now with socially distanced pods, and I felt very safe. In fact, I felt the requirement to wear your mask in your seat was overkill. When going to the bathroom or ordering your beer, yeah, wear your mask. But, especially after my 2nd dose, the usher walking up and down the aisles telling people to put their mask back on seemed excessive.
My state will be fully open end of June.
Everyone I know of is vaccinated.
About 80% of the people at the gym no longer wear a mask.
Everyone i know will be vaccinated soon.
I did like the fact that I haven’t been sick in a long while. Wondering if I should keep wearing mask at the gym. I kinda got used to it, no longer have trouble breathing even with heavy cardio and lifting. Also, probably healthier walking outside too with the city air.
My n90 respirator that I’ve been wearing when i need to be indoors was actually designed for exercising in polluted air. The story is that the guy’s father had lung damage or something, from running in some polluted east Asian city. They happened to bring it to market when there was a ton of interest in masks. ![]()
So I did something this weekend that I can’t even remember how long it’s been since I’ve done it… well over a year anyway…
I put on makeup!
Yep… I had two parties this weekend and I wore makeup, even lipstick, to both.
I gotta think that cosmetics companies must have been really hurting from the pandemic.
You never used it with Teams meetings?
Nah… I doubt the resolution is good enough to really tell. Maybe I’m wrong, dunno. Besides pretty quickly someone shares their screen and then we’re looking at that, not each other.
I don’t wear much makeup on teams calls. Just a touch of concealer and eyeliner. I will go back to wearing a bit more makeup when I RTO, but I’m ditching the foundation, as my skin has cleared up noticeably in the last year (new skincare routine plus less wearing of it in general). I dunno, I don’t feel as self conscious being on camera as I do being in the office.
