Home Improvements

This was in our basement. The whole house was builder beige and it needed something.

Nice. How do you grout something like.that?

I just used some inexpensive mortar and a pointing tool. Cleaned off excess with a brush.

And did you just glue the bricks on?

I’m not 100% sure, but I think I used mastic. Thinset would also work but I was doing this evenings and mastic is easy that way. Put the lid on when you’re done, take the lid off the next night.

For Tiffany, since it’s a wet room, wouldn’t recommend mastic since it’s organic and you could get mold.

Looks pretty big for a back splash.

Not necessarily home improvements, but…

I replaced the water filter in my refrigerator, and now it makes a buzzing sound for about five seconds while I fill a glass.
I see what the internet says (should go away in a few days, but it’s been a week), but you folks are smarter than the average internet.
Latest search resulted in this:
https://homeguides.sfgate.com/repair-noisy-filtered-water-dispenser-63912.html

Is it:

  1. Shitty filter (previous filters did not ever do this) bought on the internet?
  2. Poorly installed (user error), and need to re-install?
  3. Air in the hose, and how to de-air it?
  4. Try a different filter (I bought several of the same, unfortunately, but maybe this one is not good)?

That’s what the landscapers are for.

I can’t find any that will pull weeds.

$600 for installing 6 wafer ceiling lights in my living room and replacing 3 outlets in my basement. I had to pick up the supplies (which is fine - I am a Home Depot regular and my family was full of construction guys). I’ll get out of this at just under $1K which I am happy about.

2nd time I am using this electrician. He leaves a bit of a mess (doesn’t vaccuum up , leaves little wires everywhere he puts in an outlet), but I get it. I can do that part easily.

Holy Fcuk! Dusty! I learned that I do not have drywalled walls and ceilings, but double 1" concrete slabs. It was ridiculous trying to cut holes in. Dude said it took 5x as long to do the job. He burned through several reciprocating saw blades and needs to come back today to putty the cracks it created. Should I float him a bit extra $? I was thinking $200. It was also the first 90+*F day and he had to be in the attic for extended periods of time. Poor guy! Buuut GeeZus can he talk. He talks so fast and has story after story…

Yeah you should. Paying contractors is a good way to get them back when they’re super busy.
Pretty sure the last electrical job I had done only happened because they knew I paid same day. They’re booked to 2023 around here right now.

Totally agree. When my plumbers replaced my water main last year everything kind of went south and it wasn’t their fault. Took a half day longer than expected, and I asked them what was fair. I think the owner asked if we could come up $200 and I didn’t try to negotiate, just paid it.

Some of his stories he’s sort of begging for extra $ - He even gets rides to and from my home.

  • Totalled my tuck
  • Wife’s in pain and cannot work
  • got 6 kids (one died)
  • Someone didn’t pay me $1,200 worth of work
  • Don’t talk to my mom

I think I’ll start with $200 - cause he’s even stated “this job is a $2000 job”

WTAF? Is this true? You verified this yourself? What kind of hangers are used to support this? What kind of joists? I am familiar with 1/2" cement backer boards, but 1", and double clad? Was your home a shooting range? I’d be worried this dude is taking you for a ride.

Not my first rodeo - I saw with my own two eyes. I do appreciate the peer review and concern though.

How old is this house? And is it a single family home? I’m curious.

Hmm, 1950s I believe. SFH, tri level.

So it’s not likely plaster. And you say it’s solid, so it’s not blue board with a skim coat of plaster. If it’s concrete, I wonder how it was installed. It seems challenging to pour in place, and a ton of labor to do that many forms. But using pre-cast isn’t easy just due to the sheer weight of 1” thick slabs.

I’m almost coming back to plaster, is it possible it’s plaster instead of concrete?
