I’d rather hire someone who’s constantly on Adderall and is super productive.
I can name actuaries who smoke like chimneys!!!
The group at my company that used to be called “Human Resources” is now called “Talent Management”. So we are all talent, actuaries, claims adjusters, and data entry specialists alike.
Lol. They should be called product development. Though that could get confusing.
Do you get to specify what color M&Ms are not permitted in the break room?
I had an employer screen for smoking tobacco cigarettes. Wasn’t allowed. They later rescinded that policy when they realized they were missing out on talent because of it.
I had an employer that was debating actually doing random drug tests. Heard it from upper management on a confidential basis. They abandoned it because they were worried they’d lose at least a third of IT and over 10% of most departments.
Do you get to specify what color M&Ms are not permitted in the break room?
Alas, no.
and RN
Were they not hiring smokers at all, or just for the purposes of charging higher insurance premiums?
At the time they were not hiring smokers. Some existing employees were grandfathered in, but they had to go off campus to smoke. Prior to me being there they used to have designated smoking areas, but the removed those. I don’t smoke so it wasn’t an issue, but I think there were some managers grumbling that they couldn’t hire good candidates because of it.
Don’t know about my current state but where I used to live smokers were a protected class. Had a direct report who smoked, didn’t care for the smell when I walked in her office.
I remember going on a corporate volunteer service day trip, and the millennials on my team were asking where they can find blow.
Fun group.
didn’t care for the smell when I walked in her office.
I actively hate the smell. One time I got my hair cut from a lady who just came in from her smoke break. I had to breathe in that crap the entire time.
Ugh, that happened to me once when my barber let his son cut my hair.
It’s frustrating that one of the local music hangouts allows smoking - missing out on a lot of good bands because of it. They would get more business if they sent the smokers outside, but obviously the owners don’t care.
smoking in public venues is still legal where you live?
It is in vegas
For the most part it’s not but there is a loophole for places that get most of their revenue from alcohol sales, even if they serve food.
to me that doesn’t sound like “for the most part it’s not”. bars pretty much always get most of their revenue from alcohol. in nyc it’s not legal to smoke in bars. i thought that had spread to most of the country. guess not.
That reminds of the time I was in Vegas, went to a blackjack table and some guy asked, “Do you mind if I smoke?” Shocked that would even be a question in that city, I just shrugged and said, “It’s your right.” He still smoked but at least was kind enough not to blow it in my direction.
“Freestanding” bars get most of their revenue from alcohol, but most bars I’ve been to have been part of restaurants so they wouldn’t qualify for the loophole. Nightclubs like the one I described are a common loophole.
One of my friends used to share a 2-person office with a smoker. It reeked in there after her co-worker came back from her smoke break. Friend hated it, and it was easy to see smell why.
