Has GoA become an over 55 community?

I am in the mode. So I guess I’m not really dropping the average much if any… that was based on the assertion in the thread title that the forum is age 55+.

Ooh, more votes. I’m going to switch to %, but put the values in order. (I HATE how these polls are always listed by frequency, even when the entries have a natural order.) Now looking at:

under 30: 2% (all 25-29)
30-34: 13%
35-39: 11%
40-44: 18%
45-49: 14%
50-54: 14%
55-59: 11%
60-64: 13%
65+: 4% (all 70-74)

The median remains 45-49.

We have the youth onboard!

In all seriousness though, if it would be good for the site to attract a few new members each year, if only to replace people who stop posting, then how would that happen?

Stop using all those fancy statistical terms. It’s been years and years since I’ve taken Course 1.

lol

That Diabeetus guy is only 50 in that photo. He’s like one of the youngsters that GoA is trying to attract.

Don’t I remember reading that the use of traditional forums was proportionately low among younger Gen Y’s / Gen Z’s / Gen α’s ?

If so, that might contribute to the demographics being observed from the survey.

For my hobbies, I typically don’t even look to see if there are traditional forums these days and just go straight to reddit. That’s not ideal, as most subreddits are hive minds that think there is one “best” way to do things but good traditional forums are rare.

That’s ok, I have to take mine OFF to see them. So on average we probably have perfect vision.

Are you repurposing the duck hunting joke?

The quilting sub is a rare gem where it’s all positivity and welcoming of noobs. The knitting sub, in comparison, is all snobbery and gate keeping. Maybe it’s because quilting is a lot more complex and less common as a hobby? I don’t know. But it’s a lovely place.

Are you a member of ravelry? My friends who do that kind of thing mostly love it (although there was some weird drama a while back, the details of which i no longer recall.)

I have a revelry account, but I’ve only used it for patterns, never any kind of community. I recall a few years ago there was a big thing where
MAGA patterns were banned.

I like knitting and crocheting, but I feel like I’ve done everything I want to do with both, and quilting and sewing hold my interest better anyway.

They banned maga patterns! That’s even more drama than the thing i don’t quite remember. But back in the heyday of the ao, i was telling with a friend about hanging out “socially” on an actuarial chat site, and he said that his girlfriend hung out socially on her knitting chat site, which turned out to be ravelry.

I greatly bring up the average age of posters as one of the few septuagenarians here.

I didn’t start posting on AO until after I retired as I didn’t have time for such frivolity before then. I find GoActuary to be a safe space for an old guy. Folks here have been supportive when I meander into personal stuff: much appreciated!
