Just finished a 30 minute WhatsApp video chat with our son who is in Bucharest en route to Sofia. Despite all his cognitive challenges resulting from his bike accident 5 years ago he is still able to indulge his passion for travelling. Happy about that although we worry as he is gone for 5-6 months at a time.

WhatsApp is incredible for keeping in touch. When our eldest daughter went backpacking for a year in Asia in 1996/97 we went for weeks without contact. Now we always know where our son is and we can share photos and news every day. Young folks probably just take this for granted but an oldster like me is amazed by the revolution in communication facilities during my lifetime.

I have never received any money from a class action. It’s always something stupid like a coupon to buy additional services from the company that screwed me, while the lawyers get paid a boatload.

I got a $70 credit once from Vitamix in a class action deal. And oddly enough, right after that we cracked the jar, and that made the replacement a lot cheaper.

I ran into a woman I went to high school with on one of the Reddit subs for old houses. She included herself in one of the pics, I was scrolling and did a double-take. She had a bit of a rough start to life, this is her first ever home purchase!

I found that there is a branch of my church (a very small group) for Mandarin Chinese speakers near me (about 15 minutes away, a long way considering I probably pass 15-30 church buildings each with 3-4 wards (400-500 members) to get there). I have gone twice and am amazed at how much I actually understand of the Chinese from my mission in Taiwan 42 years ago. More incentive to work on improving my skills.

This (gifted) NY Times article brought back happy memories from my university days.

The ferryman being interviewed was in my year at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. One of my favourite outings in those days was to take my bicycle on the ferry from Kingston to Wolfe Island, bicycle across the lovely flat island and take Bruce’s family’s ferry to Cape Vincent, NY.

The customs officer on the US side often didn’t bother checking any documentation: a driver’s licence would suffice at most. Sad to see the US ferry service dying but I can’t imagine many Canadians would be using it these days.

In any event, bicycling on Wolfe Island is still a popular option for Kingston-area residents. The island is all farmland: little traffic and lovely scenery.

I’ve a very good friend who lives on Wolfe Island. It’s a beautiful spot. If it wasn’t in Eastern Ontario, I’d like to live there.
Nope, correction, she lives on amherst island, the next island beside wolfe island. There’s a one way ferry to the canadian mainland. I thought it was odd, I didn’t recall an american connection. Either way, amherst island sounds about the same as wolfe island, and you can take your bike on the ferry for free.

Curious that I know someone on amherst island, and even more curious, I know vaguely of a second person - my friend had a classmate in high school who also lives on the island.

I bicycled on Amherst Island in later years: it is also a lovely place. Would be nice to have a house there for weekends but could be a nuisance going to the mainland for groceries, etc., if you lived there full time.

With wfh, they hardly ever have to leave. my friend works for the university so she gets all the benefits of a good job, while living on an island with 300 people. talk about peaceful.

I did a biking event today. 3,249 feet of climbing over 11.2 miles.
My goal was to come in under double the time of the winner.
The winner got 42:29. My time…1:24:57.

I got invited to a ‘sporting event’ by a life company. I don’t go to these things because a) they’re stupid b)I don’t follow sports and c) give me money instead, I don’t do schmoozing crap. And also d) they’re stupid.
But…tomorrow night is the leafs against the habs and apparently the life company has some very excellent seats. I’m gonna go, I expect it to be crazy not because of the game but because of the fans. The life company rep that’s taking me is getting dressed up as a habs fan lol.
