Happy Thoughts

Our peaches are ripe. I’m making fresh peach cobbler tonight.

Sad that there’s no peaches around here.
We apparently have paw paws native to here, but also apparently any remaining trees are a closely guarded secret.

TIL they are as far north as you are. They grow over a lot of the eastern US.

It’s a tasty fruit, but I have never seen them for sale commercially. They need to ripen on the tree and they go bad within days, so that doesn’t make for a good commercial crop.

I was back home in redneck territory on the weekend. I complained to my bil about the rust on my truck. It’s a high end truck that I’ve maintained, so it runs like new and I don’t want to pay for a new one. And I also don’t want to pay the 10-15k i got quoted to replace the panels.

He called a buddy of his who can do old school bodywork. Expected cost, 1-2k all in. So, happy that in a month or two, my truck will look reasonably presentable again.

There’s a house on my street with a peach tree. I can smell them when I walk by.

Of ‘old school bodywork’ includes Bondo, then it may not last as long. But for that cost delta, it’s what I’d do.

He grinds off the rust then welds in panels. So afaik, done right.
It only needs to last a few more years. It’s got 325k on it now, I figure if I push it to 500k then the rest of it will be pretty much over as well. Though maybe not, I keep everything maintained so despite the mileage, there’s no nagging little things that don’t work anymore. Which happens a lot with older cars I think.

Oh yeah, 325k miles, that’s the right call. No way to justify a $15k paint job.

Well, I could. I plan on keeping the truck for quite a while. 15k is cheaper than a new truck. Heck, a new engine is cheaper than a new truck. I just didn’t want to spend that much * right now *.

Wait, damn metric system, is that 325,000 kilometers? If that’s it, and it’s a diesel, it’s got a ways to go.

Of course it’s kilometers. Rational people don’t use measurements based on what, the width of some dead guys thumb.

Yes, well one ten-thousandth of the earth’s circumference is clearly much more practical for every day purposes because ordinary people have a very good sense of the size of the earth and what splitting something into 10,000 equal pieces looks like. [/red font]

The meter is officially defined using lengths of wavelengths of light or something roughly like that.

Using water, you can equate volume, distance, and mass. 1 liter of water measures 10cm cubed, and weighs 1 kg.

A gram and a meter both have prefixes that are multiples of 10. So everything is some variation of 10 times a gram or liter. A decaliter is 10 liters iirc. Not this 12 inches in a foot insanity.

You can learn the entire metric system in public school in a morning.

Well sure, now… that’s probably true of the foot also.

The kilometer was originally defined as one ten-thousandth of the circumference of the earth. (Well, technically the meter was one ten-millionth, but po-tay-to / po-tah-to.)

Happy Thought, i don’t have cancer. Ok, never did, but had some dermatogical issues that for no reason at all had me worried.

Made dermatologist appointment, two weeks ago. Not my regular screening guy, whose first available was in September.

Was more paranoid about my wife, whose dad just died of skin cancer. Her sister just finished Chemo for breast cancer. Mrs PZ, was the one who brought them to all their appointnents. Sister actually got her diagnosis the day their dad went into hospice.

So, now I had an appointment with the Dr. who diagnosed my FiL. Get there and told he had an emergency and I was cancelled. I never got the call. Did get texts asking me to confirm. Anyway, anxiety building. and going on a two week cruise next month, don’t want to put it off.

I was nice, but firm. I got in with another Dr. and I need a cream. Not nothing, but not cancer. It is also not lupus
