Sounds like Toronto police acted a bit faster today than the Uvalde police. Hard to say how real the threat was but folks donât walk around Toronto with a rifle.

I donât know where the line is, but it did take an amendment to end poll taxes, so taxes on a constitutionally protected right donât sound unconstitutional by their nature.
Canada restricts centerfire to 5 rounds.so mags bigger than that are pinned to 5.
Shotguns are limited to 3 except in rare circumstances like target shooting. So shotguns come with an orange plug that limit the capacity. I saw an American get a 300 ticket for that one.
Itâs fine, I donât have a problem with those restrictions because they donât restrict normal use. The one exception was that some years ago they reduced capacity on 22s. My son had a large capacity 22 magazine for plinking that suddenly became illegal.

Do cops go around wielding all kinds of weapons and acting tough against âbad guys?â Absolutely. Thatâs what makes them heroes.
Will cops put themselves at risk to save your life from a bad guy? 
Donât worry, your death wonât be in vain. Theyâll use it as a reason why they need more weaponry and body armor and such that theyâll show off at every chance and never use when itâs really needed.

Iâm kind of excited about this NRA Convention in Houston this weekend. The goofball wing of the Republican party is all there. I think this might be the time when Trump says something so stupid and heartless that the public turns even more towards tougher gun control and against him. The sooner Trump is out of the picture the sooner Americaâs mental health improves.

Itâs a complete failure of Abbottâs policy of school hardening, but I am sure he will find a way to claim success, because you know, the ratio of the number of rounds of ammo the shooter bought to the number of dead kids is around 20:1.

Smart move on not allowing guns at the convention. If I were one of the parents I would definitely be thinking about shooting those guys.
I donât even have particularly strong feelings on gun laws, but itâs hard to believe our top politicians are going to the big gun party, yapping on about how the liberals want to take your guns, while the mortician is still sewing my kidâs body parts together.

24th amendment only applies to federal elections. State/local poll taxes were ruled unconstitutional via the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.

Mrs. Vashtar was feeling guilty, because on Monday afternoon, she randomly asked Alexa to play âI donât like Mondaysâ. I donât think she should feel bad. I do wonder if sheâs clairvoyant.
Actuarially speaking, I donât think we have 3 seconds. That would be a convenient window of time, just time enough to make a definite choice, and then we further assume that the choice matters, but I donât think it is probable.
I didnât realize this but Governor Abbot was so upset about the mental health crisis in Texas that he CUT $211M from the Texas mental health services budget.

Probably because itâs all the illegal immigrants who are mentally ill. Get rid of them, get rid of LGBTQ+s [which ⌠there could be more of if abortion is made illegal and prosecuted at every chance like he wants], get rid of grooming teachers who weâre again going to propose be armed to hold off intruders, etc. etc. etc., and then thereâs no more mental illness.
So simple, even a MAGA Republican can figure it out.

One of my Facebook friends made a post about this and someone that I donât know responded that more people are killed by lightning strikes each year than school shootings. Everyone was saying that was crazy, thereâs been 200+ school shootings this year, etc. With no evidence, he held fast that this was true.
So I decided to nerd out and investigate. Iâm an actuary⌠counting dead people is what I do, after all.
By my count, if you look at child deaths (victim is under 18 or an 18-19 year old student at the school for me to count it) caused by active shooters in K-12 schools, there were 75 deaths from 2000-2021, or 3.4 in an average year. A source I found suggested that there were 72 deaths by lightning strike among 0-19 year-olds between 2006-2020, or an average of 4.8 per year.
So to my surprise it seems like the guyâs statement was true. If you cherry picked the years you might be able to make it a false statement, but I wasnât trying to do that. I just looked at Wikipediaâs list of school shootings and started at the â2000sâ section, threw out shootings where no one was killed or the victims were targeted murders and/or adults. I did not count the death of the shooter if he/she committed suicide or was taken down by law enforcement.
Two questionable ones: one where a shooter fired into the stands during a high school football game and killed a 10 year old boy. It wasnât the kidâs school, obviously, but I counted it. Another where a gunman took 6 students hostage, seemingly at random (other than they were all girls, but which girls was random) and later killed one of the hostages. Not really âactive shooterâ at that point, but certainly the shooting death of a random victim, so I counted it too.
Counting all 0-19 lightning deaths over that period might be questionable too since preschoolers definitionally canât be shot at their K-12 school and most 19 year-olds are out of school (though I did count at least one 19 year old victim in the school shootings). There were 10 for age 0-9 and 62 for age 10-19. Maybe only half the 0-9 year olds and 90% of the 10-19 year-olds is a better comparison? That would still be 4.05 lightning strike deaths per year among school-age children if my guesses are accurate.
And to be fair to the guy, heâd worded it âkidsâ killed in school shootings compared to âpeopleâ killed by lightning, which should then technically include all lightning deaths, not just kids. But comparing like ages seems more relevant to me, so I went down that rabbit hole because thatâs what I do.

Me or the friend of a friend making the initial claim?
I read the account of one of the surviving girls from the classroom. So sad. She covered herself in her dead friends blood. She said she laid on the ground for what felt like 3 hours wondering why the police hadnât shown up yet. She wonât talk to any men still because of it. Awful.
