GH-FV Fall 2020

I’m assuming I’ll get a 5/5 again but i want to see which questions I comparatively struggled on which will help me understand areas where I was thought I did well but not enough for the grader

Same :frowning:
I saw only 40 candidates passed FVC… wondering how large the pool was.

Anyone know when registration opens for Spring?

Last time I was able to register as soon a I failed- that same morning after not seeing my number

No I just see the deadline date on the website.
Ugh I was expecting to take this exam again, but I really didn’t want to.

So how’d you guys do?
I got 5’s across the board… Unbelievable. So close and yet so far.
It obviously sucks, BUT I honestly thought I would get a 3 so this is encouraging.
This time around, my goal is to read some of the source material (I had read nothing for the fall sitting).
As I mentioned before, I feel like the questions were way more detailed than TIA/Mate notecards had prepared me for, so having read the source material would have provided an advantage.

Honestly I don’t think I solved any of the math problems 100% correctly so am surprised I even made it this far. I wonder if the spring sitting will be more math heavy, since the fall sitting had so few math points. Which is not great for me, because I realized trying to solve the math problems on Excel and not on scratch paper (which you could arguably but then would have to transfer it to Excel), was much more difficult and I couldn’t organize my thoughts as well.
Ok end rant

5,5 for me. I did read the source material.

Went 5/5 again as well…twice in a row. Super frustrating. Do you guys remember how long until your “performance” details are uploaded? 1-2 weeks?

Motivation to start again is rough

I was so upset/frustrated last time that I’m determined to get over it easier/faster this time. (I got 5,4 last time so I guess I improved)

It’s just an exam… they didn’t like some of our answers as opposed to the competition…

The bright side of being knowledgeable rather than utilizing short term memory and getting lucky is it’s not going to be that hard to get well prepared again. At least this is what I tell myself.

There’s also no new material this time! Unfortunately I didn’t learn one new topic last time and it wasn’t even tested (the FVA ERR)

I don’t think I’ll ever be confident about my exam performance again.

I’m not going to start again immediately, that’s for sure.

At least it’s not like last time where we had just under 6 weeks so there was no time to waste.

I think percentiles (which are really of limited use) should come out Friday and who knows when the solutions will come out. It was a pretty long wait last time.

I agree the percentiles aren’t super helpful but I still want to see how I compare because I was fairly confident in my performance on FV-C but less so on FV-A so i want to see how my feelings match up against my performance

Yes I guess… percentiles are garbage for me cause even when I mess up a quantitative question it’ll be something everyone does badly on so I’ll still get a good percentile anyway.

And I’m always going to get a poor percentile on the non quant questions even if I did decent (for me).

At least this was the case for the summer exam.

I guess if I get a low percentile on a primarily quantitative question that’s going to hurt.

There were also a couple non quant questions that I thought I did super well on so I’ll be curious about those percentiles.

So, have you guys thought about what you’ll be doing differently in preparing for the spring sitting?

Even more focus on the list memorization for FV-A plus getting slightly better with knowing EV/AAV.
My biggest issues from A were
1)not having enough memorized
2)blowing the EV question that was a direct adaptation from the reading/TIA example

I had felt super confident with both my knowledge and performance with FV-C (hence my shock at failing) that I’m not sure what else I need to do other than even more knowledge and hope the FAS 106 question is more straight forward (like the spring/summer sitting)

I’m going to memorize more… and not skip any pocket of material.

Attempting to memorize more and being more prepared for the non quant is what I “did differently” for the fall sitting… Also I vowed not to mess of on the Pensions question but that did not work out. I’m pretty sure I did badly on Pensions in both sittings. [though the percentile for the July pension question doesn’t reflect that, but I’m sure it’s only because majority of others did even worse]

I’m even questioning if in my emphasis on doing better with the non quant I managed to mess up some quant points. It’s going to be really hard to tell if that happened because although in the July sitting there were 3 problems that were at least 75% calc points, this sitting NO questions meet this criteria.

Of course it didn’t help that the exam went from 42%* calc point in July to 26% calc points in Fall. Only 26% calc points has to be an outlier. Considering the difference in calc points, I must have done better on the non quant points in the Fall…

*It turns out I was undercounting math points in the July sitting, it’s more than 42%. Please someone let me know if I’m miscounting math points in Fall sitting as well.
