General Car Thread

i am an IN-lier. hate when they aren’t set up sensibly compared to what i am used to

I have generally been fine with the cupholders I’ve had. Civic, Mazda3, Volt, Tesla, all fine. My BMW had these cupholders that popped out of the dash and they sucked, too small and the little plastic bar that flipped down to support the cup were flimsy.

Maybe driving a 1966 Ford Galaxie for five years set me up to not be picky, that car had zero cupholders. Had to rely on nature’s cupholder, lol.

Nice that I’m not the only Luddite.
Right behind the manual shift in front of the arm-rest compartment, IMO, for cupholders.

Trying to make a list of new tech that I do find acceptable:

  1. Remind me if my turn signal is on. In the olden days, there was even a sound (ding or click) inside the car loud enough to notice.
  2. Tell me when I’m too close to anything behind me when I back up. I hit another vehicle’s tire yesterday while backing up, had no notice (no damage). Back up camera is useless, as it is too close for me to see with my Rx glasses on and hellaglare.
  3. The “memory setting for seating and mirrors” would be nice. Wife is 7 inches shorter than I. I should be able to say “Set for dtnf” before I enter the car and it would adjust to my previously set settings (hard to get in the car otherwise; she has relatively short legs).
  4. I think a car should be able to explain the “Engine Light On” issue without requiring an additional device. I mean, it knows the code already, how much more memory (or even connect to the internet) is needed?
  5. I’d like to know when any light is out on my car and needs replacing. Exactly which one would be a bonus. I think EVERY vehicle needs this, based on my observations while driving.

If these are not included, I’m slightly put out (neither of my cars has any of these). If something is added that I do not want, including replacing physical and safe buttons for hazardous screen-touch “buttons,” then I will refuse it. Mazda just released a new car that replaces buttons after being slow to adapt/adopt, while other companies have heard the market and are returning to safe and sane.

This one makes almost zero sense today. I bought a little OBD scanner on Amazon for like $30, implying the manufacturers could bake this in for much less. I’d say about the price of one banana.

read an article from Friday that mentioned how the VW e-Bus failed to properly factor in the US market’s fixation on cup holders. also poorly timed release and high price have hurt sales too.

One from May:
https://insideevs.com/news/760612/june-cupholder-idbuzz-volkswagen-accessory/

Another article from the same site noted that they didn’t understand the popularity of the two-tone paint jobs over the boring one-color, so dealers are selling wraps. And if you’re gonna wrap it, go all out.

INFIDEL!

For us it was this, and range. $60k+ for something with 230mi of EPA range? Hard pass.

I don’t care too much about the range, since I’d never drive it, or any EV, too far.
I would be concerned if I put in 200 miles of charge and it got me only 100 miles.
But that price? No effing way.

I think VW is more conservative than Tesla on rating, but 230 EPA miles may be more like 180 at 75mph. And if you are charging to 80%, you’re charging about every 140-150 miles on the road. And given the distance between DC fast chargers you may need to stop even sooner. And if it’s cold, it gets worse still.

We don’t road trip a ton. But if I had to stop after 90 minutes of driving, that’s annoying.

We take several road trips a year, and totally agree with this. That completely ruled out this vehicle for me. For regular weekly use, we don’t need much range at all.

Same, most weeks I don’t need to charge at all. I’m not asking for the moon, but it’s a van, so road trips should be in scope. 325 miles of EPA range would be fine. That would get you 200+ miles in almost any conditions, stopping every 2.5-3 hours, that’s fine.

True, but also for short commercial delivery. Put the wheel on the right side and it could replace mail trucks.

“This is not your hippie grandpa’s VW MicroBus.”

VW made their own bed with the diesel cheating. price and range? they are selling an around town toy. not all the people can afford the people cars at $60K as a toy

Even worse, I buy the scanner, and when the check engine light goes on I scan it and find the code #734. I go to my mechanic and tell him my car has an error code #734. Yet, he still charges me $40 for a code scan in his bill.

With our 2023 vw id4 the EPA range of 280 is achievable for city driving 25-45 mph. If we travel at 80 mph on the highway, which normally translates to an average of 75 mph with slow cars in the passing lane and roadworks, we’ll get 180 +/- 20 mph (headwind vs tailwind). An average of 70 will get us 195 and 65 will get us 210. Driving on the East coast where we’ll average 55-60 mph we’ll get 230-245. We’ll probably lose another 10% if it’s below freezing.

I don’t think there’s any need for more than 300 EPA for 95% of drivers, provided there are chargers at least every 150-200 miles.

You can look up codes on the internet. I know I can for my Toyotas.

I think that you missed the point. The point was that even if I knew what the code and problem was, the mechanic was still gonna redo the code read process and screw me charge me $40 for the 11 seconds it took him to do it.

Time to change mechanics. Mine doesn’t do that. Heck, mine will scan, tell me what’s wrong, then give me some choices as to what to do. Free gratis.
