General Car Thread

We were watching TV and a Ram commercial came on, so Jaspess looked up prices. Apparently a basic Ram 1500 starts at almost 70k. :anguished: And a fully equipped Jeep Grand Wagoneer is 6 figures. :face_with_raised_eyebrow::anguished:

I may be looking in the next 1-3 years so I’m slowly looking at what’s out there.

In 2013 I bought a completely loaded Ram. Paid about $55K or so.
In 2024 I bought a basic working truck ram, not so many buttons and paper speakers, for about the same amount. One that was loaded like my previous one was pushing 100k. I’m not paying that much for a truck. Same engine, same cab style, goes down the road on all four wheels.
About the only things I miss are the heated/cooled seats, and the fold-down tray in the back where you could put the seats up and have a level storage spot. But I make construct something out of plywood myself to handle that.
So yeah, truck prices=insanity.

Saw this tonight.

Is that a Cybertruck?

I wouldn’t waste pixels on those monstrosities. I’ll see if my wife took a better pic. What is inside, is what is interesting enough to waste pixels on.

The Mr. Fusion in the back seat?

Looks like a box in the back seat. With a really large lego mini figure helmet in it?

Correction: the DeLorean didn’t have a back seat. Just a little package tray.

Yeah. The pic doesn’t do it justice, but when I looked closer IRL, it appeared to be a flux capacitor.

this is where i intended to post, I’ll leave it in both places

try this here

Have an Android, new replacement phone, same as my prior A52

It won’t charge in my car.

I got a Samsung wire, knowing that worked before. nope.

mostly plug in the USB, flash of recognition, no charge. Shows charging on car’s GPS screen.

tried the plug, those never seem to work.
Though more amps.

I know the store had a $30 plug, seems excessive, but getting desperate.

Phone charges fine in the house, outlet box or USB.

Thoughts

Just a guess – the car’s USB port isn’t delivering enough power to charge the phone.

I’ve seen some newer gadgets that support, even prefer, higher wattage charging refuse to charge when insufficient power is delivered, especially when supplied from an older multi-port hub.

Also, USB ports can eventually go bad.

You might need to get a cigarette-lighter » USB charger for the car.

might be my next move and i don’t believe i ever bought a good one. just OTC at CVS

luckily, with blue tooth GPS, i don’t need it for that anymore

car is 2 1/2 years old and it worked on the prior phone, exact same model

damn, just throwing the cash around. (I have an A51 still bc I DNGAF)

There was a period of time when Hyundai/Kia were greatly improved compared to their past selves. Is that still true, and they’re still decent in spite of their recent setbacks? Or are they considered crap?

I had a Kia Soul about 10 years ago. I liked it well enough for the price. The biggest problem I had was that it was so light, in even minor snow, you had to have snow tires. I wasn’t a fan of that. Otherwise, it seemed solid.

i am very happy with my Kias, insurance companies aren’t- high theft - so i will switch on next lease

stupid Tiktokkers

i have owned 4 kia’s and a hyundai. 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2018. and a 2017 hyundai.

all have been pretty reliable. the newer ones are plenty nice for what I need in terms of features.

the insurance thing is real esp if you have the ones with a key fob for entry AND the key for ignition. that’s the one with the tiktok problem. others might get broken into by idiots. but my insurer was not covering the problem ones when I switched but all of my vehicles were good. (no longer have the 08 - RIP to a drunk driver while parked in front of my house)

Bump:
My old car’s driver’s seat belt will not click closed.
Gonna check the cost on that…
$27. Not bad.
I will now have to decide if I can install it myself. If I have to take out the seat, then I’d rather not. Might as well get a nice seat if I do that.
EDIT: turns out I need to take out the seat, so I’m gonna let someone else do that.

The belt also is missing its little button that prevents the clip from dropping to the bottom of the belt, resulting in my reaching between the seat and the door (not a lot of space) to find the clip. Gonna try some jury rigging for that.

EDIT
OK, so ordered it. Be here in a couple days. I had a choice between two and wondered what the difference is. I had to go deep to see that my model year had two different latches made.

Nit: They should provide an option to deliver it to my local Toyota dealer for $0 additional, since they will be delivering stuff frequently there anyway. Only thing I like about WalMart: Free delivery to the store of my choice.
