General Car Thread

Nah it’s digital and sounds fine in the car.
Going to be Xmas music the whole way home from Thanksgiving. Hoping I somehow get stabbed in ears during the holiday.

So you are streaming through an internet connection rather than a satellite server. Google is suggesting nothing has changed on the satellite service that runs at 64kbps.

So why that over one of the digital only services like Spotify/Amazon/Apple?

Maybe folk music?

Honestly I didn’t know there was a difference. It’s Weaselette’s department. If we ever get a new, modern car I assume we’d switch to something else. Not even sure if our 2011 factory stereo would be compatible. If it was up to me we’d still be on ipod shuffle mode like DTNF.

Driving through areas that lack cell service?

Can attest to this. We just drove from east to west across the northern states, 99% on interstates and there were several hour or so times we couldn’t use Amazon streaming and I went back to the songs that were already on my phone.

Sure, I90/94 across Montana is going to have some dead zones for cell service. On Spotify, you can run playlists offline for those situations, which I would think for most of us, would be relatively uncommon.

Canada has lots of areas with lousy cell service. Particularly with the switch to 5G which has a smaller service area.

Im pretty sure its americana

brought minivan in for service at friend’s shop. oil change (and other stuff). he saved the oil filter to shame me with “you have to remember to bring it in more regularly.” it looked bad. end result…all good.

Renting a jeep.
First thoughts:

  1. Where TF are the window controls?? Middle console? Stupid. Put them on the WINDOW!!
  2. Screen for climate control. Terrible.
  3. Screen for radio control. Terrible.
  4. Oh, it’s raining. The wiper control can be moved upward for one-time wipe. For all other uses, it is a twist-dial. Terrible.

I can see why more accidents occur in unfamiliar vehicles, either brand new or rentals. Actuarial confirmation needed. Just a gut feeling.

ive had my car for almost 4 years. still not used to the way the climate control works. dials and screen indications instead of the old school look/feel. at least the rest is in traditional places. my wife hates driving it

Made my car really unhappy with me back in December. Backed it in/out of the garage a few times to work on a project. I let it idle a bit, but it never got fully to temp. Next time I started it…rough idle, check engine came on…took it out for a longer drive to get it warmed up - it ran/sounded fine once I left the driveway. The engine light did flash for a few seconds a couple miles down the road but went back off (car was still going fine when that happened). Check engine light went off completely after a few more trips to the store, and it has been good since then. I assume some condensation built up on a sensor or something and it took a while to clear off the engine code.

Oh, and this was a PHEV. Came to me with 0 charge!! Budget apparently doesn’t care about the environment.
And never went above 1% via regeneration.
Also, shitty traction.
Very high off the ground. Wife had a bit of a time getting up into it.

Amazing how Chrysler still exists.

My neighborhood is like 25% Jeeps, 25% 4-Runners, 25% Teslas, and 25% everything else.

Just the worst. And they’ve been garbage for a long time. I’m told a good chunk of their business is selling cars to young guys in the military, and are willing to write loans to young people with poor credit. Seems plausible.

Retorts:

I had a different make model that had the windows on the center console. Once you’ve owned it for a couple of week, it becomes second nature. I have also owned a couple of Jeeps. I found the controls on mine were pretty good once you learned how to use them. My Grand Cherokee had radio controls on the back of the steering wheel that allowed you to control the sound system without moving you hands. I though that was cool. What I didn’t like about my Jeeps was the ongoing repair bills that became as predictable as a car payment.

Screen controls on any make/model are pretty bad. I hate them. I think they cause accidents, because they are slow to respond to inputs, and draw the driver’s attention off the road. My Honda has a HUD. I think it’s a really cool feature. I wish there were even more data available on the HUD display. I can only get speed, direction, and turn-by-turn directions if using the nav system.

I think most wiper controls work similar to the way you describe. Again, once you own it for a length of time, the controls become second nature. Rental cars are bound to be unfamiliar, unless you rent a copy of what you already own.

Pretty much why i would like to restore my car, if it could cost about $20k, over buying anything younger than about ten years old.

I forget how many miles are on your car. It may be cheaper to find a low-mileage old-ish car and buy that, and replace things like belts and hoses. If your car is low mileage then you could maybe do a ton of preventative stuff to ensure it’ll run reliably for many years. Change all fluids, belts, hoses, plugs and wires, ignition coil, shock absorbers, check bushings. Unless you have to re-paint the thing it wouldn’t be a massive bill. Even re-upholstering the seats could probably be done, I’d tell you to add heated seats but maybe not a huge benefit in your climate.

I am not a millennial, but after owning both a 3 row SUV and a minivan, the minivan is superior in every way other than the stigma. AWD is available on the Pacifica and Sienna if you just can’t not drive the few hours a year when roads might be so bad you could not manage with FWD.
