My dad was the streets superintendent in my town. If it snowed overnight his first priority was the main thoroughfares and the school bus routes. My friends didn’t appreciate that he was so good at his job.
I don’t ever remember school being canceled because of a snow storm in the morning. There were times the bus didn’t go all the way out to the furthest kids stops so they didn’t have to go to school but I don’t think they knew until the bus just never showed up. They did send the bus students home a few times in the early afternoon when a big storm started after noon. I think there might have been one time when they sent us home early and canceled school the next day but that was extremely rare. And the walking kids still had to go to school and stay the full day.
Now snow days are a fairly regular item and get announced via email or text and on FB and IG along with TV and Radio.
