I much prefer the capped end of a ball point pen. The clip part sticks out and catches the gear better.

Yeah, many pencils were a little too thin to work great, too. You had to keep them at an angle to keep them engaged with the sticky out things on the wheel. The angle meant increased friction on the sides of the wheel, causing the wheel to stick more.
