So, if I make a sandwich, I slice it across the bread and make two rectangles. Except if it’s a grilled cheese sandwich, I slice those on the diagonal.

I have no idea why.

Cutting on the diagonal increases the perimeter of the eating surface more than cutting into rectangles.

I have an elegant proof of this, but the margins are too small for me to show it here.

I do this too, most likely because it allows for better dipping into a cup of tomato soup.
