of course, it was me -teaching- school, but that’s ok. I used spreadsheets to keep the grades, and that was it.

Preferred way to do the same thing as merging cells:
Format / Alignment / Text Alignment / Horizontal / Center Across Selection

Yes. I wish there was a way to do this vertically as well.
You can make a text box, then rotate it 90 degrees.
Or pi/2 radians.
