Electric Vehicles

Someone else might want that energy. Put it on a truck or something!

Or, what if we put it IN a truck?

I double-checked, it was 10 cents last month and 12.6 cents one month in the summer, but I’m not taking into consideration the time of day.

I got in a fender bender in one of the recent snowstorms and waiting to hear if they’ll consider it totaled. I may be in the market more quickly than I thought. It’s disappointing to see all the low ratings on consumer reports for electric SUVs. The best all-around option for us looks like the Rav 4 plug-in.

mmmmm breadsticks…

I use Consumer Reports for many items but don’t know if it’s a good source for car reviews (I also never use it for wine reviews). There are so many much more comprehensive review sites out there.

I really like our VW ID4 and Consumer Reports only gave it a 62. One reason they marked it down because of its brake pedal but with one-pedal driving you rarely use the brake. It also gave it the lowest score for noises and leaks and it’s one of the quietest cars I’ve ever been in.

Looking into a used Bolt right now, sealing the death of fun.

The ID4 was the best car I ever drove. Would get another one if I’m ever in position to need to own a car again.

The thing I love about my car is the cameras and display. Knowing that my not-at-fault fender bender was recorded. And anytime I’m backing up having complete confidence in the screen to show me exactly where my car is, the other cars, pedestrians and concrete in the parking lot as I enter/exit my space, when I’m not backing in which is most of the time.

I know we’ve talked about this a fair amount. Have you driven a Bolt? If so, does the instant low-end torque/zippiness not make up for the lack of shifting/finding the power band? Is the handling a big deal for you?

No. Rowing my own = life.

Yes. An extra 1000lb from my current car means less confidence in cornering, especially on certain roads near me. So, less fun = Death.

But, I’m prepared for it. Wife has to approve, since she does most of the short drives (work and back) and will be driving it. I will drive her car, a small hybrid similar to a Prius. Might keep my larger sporty car for large or long purchases.

The EU is turning the corner on EV adoption.

Yep, it’s totaled. Need to start researching a replacement. I think a PHEV is in our sweet spot. One that doesn’t light on fire would be nice, given our 2 year old sleeps above the garage.

If fire risk was your biggest concern, phev would probably be the worst of both worlds.

This study includes PHEVs in with Hybrids. They have a much higher fire risk (138X) because of the combination of a gas tank and a sizeable battery.

A recent study by US insurer, AutoinsuranceEZ found that hybrid cars had the worst fire record, while EVs were the least likely type of car to catch fire. Hybrid cars had 3474.5 fires per 100,000 sale; petrol cars had 1,529.9 fires per 100,000 sales and EVs had just 25.1 fires per 100,000 sales.

I am interested to see what the main causes were and how to e-void them.

Ford recently had a fire risk recall due to faulty engine block heaters. Although that isn’t probably a big deal in your neck of the woods.

Tesla has announced they will stop production of the S and X. I mean, they never really updated them, but it was a flagship. They say they are repurposing the factory to make robots.

Good news, the cybertruck is still going to be available!

That’s the only thing keeping Tesla afloat.

Checks out, I’m told the cybertruck can be used as a boat for short distances.
