Cybertruck is officially a flop

https://electrek.co/2025/03/06/tesla-now-offers-discounted-financing-on-cybertruck-as-the-truck-turns-out-to-be-a-flop/

Tesla stock not doing so great either:

Why? Well sales are way down in Europe and down a little in the US too:

Stealing money from the government is a lot easier than selling cars. So, I suspect he doesn’t care all that much.

Drove by Galpin Motors (anyone reading The Autopian has heard of it) the other day, and they had four Buzzes outside.
Cool, but $20K overpriced for me. And, its uses do not match my needs.

This. I had high hopes for this vehicle, but it’s not for me.

I’ve seen multiple Buzzes around the neighborhood.

If I had more kids than my presently adult-aged ones, sure. This is 20 years late for me.
Taking the gang (six adults total 1000lbs, plus cases of wine) wine-tasting 100+ miles away would suck if we had to stop for 30 minutes for electricity (would be nice if a vintner had a charging station so we can taste while it fills). But yeah, $26.24 for that trip (and we do it at least once every other month) instead of $20… wait, …
Someone check my maths:

  1. 200 miles
  2. ID.Buzz uses 41kWh per 100 miles
  3. That’s 82 kWh used for trip.
  4. My Tier 1 rate is $0.34 per kWh.
  5. So… $26.24 +/- a dollar or so. Carrying 1000 lbs more than otherwise empty would increase the required power (or would it just not go as fast?).

Um, at $4/gallon and 40mpg, that’s five gallons and $20 for the trip.
Mind you, our electricity is pretty fucking expensive versus gasoline right now.

Watching this youtube right now about the ID.Buzz. Amateur reviewers, so, grain of salt.

This would be a gamechanger if the technology was ubiquitous

You fit 6 adults + wine in a 40 mpg car? I am lucky to get 35 mpg highway in Odyssey.

3 times faster than the fastest of the fast chargers in US. I believe new versions of vehicles would be needed to handle that sort of speed. To fill up as fast as you can with gas would be a big step.

No. I just went 200 miles r/t this weekend in my hybrid.
If I were taking others, then they wouldn’t be driving their cars, so they would be saving, not me (I could charge them, I guess).

Watching this youtube some more: at 13:45, dude shows the max payload, which is 948lbs.

Then, lost $11,000 in two months. So, if maybe 3000 miles (it was driven from PA to CO for some idiotic reason) means it cost them over $3/mile. They don’t seem too smart. Summary: don’t buy it new.

I read the article quickly so perhaps I missed it, what is the range of this one? I saw another article that said:

“BYD claims tests on the new Han L electric sedan showed five minutes on the 1MW charger gave it an additional 470km of range.”

That’s 292 miles, and I assume the five minute charge didn’t get it to 100% SOC. At any rate, it looks like this is pretty wild, drive four hours, stop for five, maybe seven minutes, repeat.

I know BYD has gotten a ton of money from the government. But they are moving very quickly, I’d love to drive one.

I think they are just talking charger capability: 400+km in 5 minutes. That’s basically gassing up.

Yup, I was just curious what the max range is

haha

That guy is hilarious.

So, what is the conclusion? I’m already bored with watching.
either:

  1. They are cheap and undependable.
  2. The American Automobile Companies work with the Gov’t to keep them out.

Ugh, way too much non-functional shit. Ooh, it can go in a circle! So the fuck what?
Then, he’s driving it and says nothing about it.
“The interiors are cool.” Superficial shit.

if Musk is killing Tesla, Polestar wants to deliver the final blow. They are offering Tesla drivers a $20,000 discount for a new Polestar if they trade in their “swasticars.”

Yep, Polestar is offering anyone who owns or leases a Tesla $5,000 off a lease on a brand new Polestar 3. Combined with their latest $15,000 Polestar Clean Vehicle Incentive, any Tesla driver can buy a Polestar 3 for a whopping $20,000 off.

They are a lot of money, don’t get me wrong. But I don’t think you get anything else near that for 20k less than those are selling for.

What bother’s me is the Autopian’s review, which I will summarize: It’s Great except for the ONE big problem.

I won’t tease: The big problem is that it’s a big comfortable transport vehicle that would be terrific for road trips except for the practical limitation of 150 to 160 mile range and the average “refill” price at the charger of $45. That’s 2.5X the cost per mile of a comparable ICE engine.

And add to that the other gripes that the U.S.'s charger network is still a crap show.
Not enough chargers.
Chargers don’t work when you get there.
Chargers work SLOW when you get there.
Chargers are more expensive than advertised.
Chargers are occupied when you get there.
Charging port & cable styles are incompatible across vehicle models.
