Means testing becomes an option when you are effectively broke as a country and/or you have adequate private provision for most (see Australia). Then its about targeting the poorest only.
The US is not there yet (you can raise taxes to cover the shortfall easily enough), while the UK might have to do it eventually if the public finances keep deteriorating.
Australia is obnoxious where the “smart option” is to drain your superannuation plan at age-60 and use it to buy a bigger house or do renos so you can collect the full aged pension at age-65.
So far we’ve gone parasailing, surfing (sons), and mini golfing, plus watching the sunset in the beach and hanging at the pool. I’m hoping we get up Haleakala (crater was closed due to fires last visit) and snorkel. My spouse and kids haven’t been to the Iao Valley either.
As far as food, there’s a shave ice place we’ve gone to twice. We’ve been waiting for Cones on Kihei to reopen (tomorrow). My sons really liked Blackrock Pizza, and my kid with celiac was happy to have actual good pizza (GF cauliflower crust). (The Cinnamon Roll Place has GF cinnamon rolls, too.) A couple of my old college roommates live on Maui, so we had kalua pig at their house one night.
I’ve actually never been to either of those! We go right by the cinnamon roll shop all the time but somehow never made it in.
I don’t know if you want recommendations from me, lol. Kitoko in the South Maui Gardens is pretty amazing and in general the gardens are just a nice place. You probably can’t get a table at Koiso sushi, they book way in advance, but you could get an order to go.
There’s always a line for The Cinnamon Roll Place. If you’ve never been to Cones on Kihei, they have about 100 flavors of soft serve.
ETA: I got a sandwich and my spouse got at calzone at Blackrock Pizza, which were okay. My sons want to go back, and I think we’ll likely just get pizza.
We were bummed the shave ice place in the mini golf parking lot was closed. The Dole whip there was awesome. I made Dole whip at home for a couple of weeks after our trip last year. Homemade is better than the Dole whip you can buy in the frozen section at the grocery store.
