DOGE (or: the Elmo Show)

Trump and Musk are such an odd juxtaposition.

Once the carcass is stripped clean they will attack each other.

I haven’t seen this mentioned in conventional media, but…

This is a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Also very illegal.

The infighting and jockeying for position has begun!

I’d bet this time around any jockeying for position won’t go over well and I think Elon holds far more power at this point. With 2 days into the job, Patel just might be the first to go. And from the Trump/Elon standpoint, that’ll also provide the great example to keep everyone else quiet, of course.

So ELMO is providing cover for about $2T in spending cuts.

Terrorise the federal workforce on one hand (with minimal reductions in spending), and then materially cutting federal spending on the other hand while also locking in the tax cuts.

That seems to be the plan now over 10Y.

He is looking to cut:

Medicaid
Medicare
Food Stamps
Education

DOGE’s self reported wall of receipts keeps changing as people find mistakes.

DOGE’s shrinking savings

Feb. 17 $16.5 billion
Feb. 18 16.5
Feb. 19 8.5
Feb. 20 7.2

Source: WSJ and DOGE

WSJ says it’s really $2.6B, and only a minimal amount is DEI related.

To me, doesn’t seem like any of the cancellations were due to waste, fraud, or abuse. There is waste and fraud in many different government programs and that’s a good thing to go after. DOGE is not doing that, but rather getting rid of departments/programs that they don’t like whose funding and existence was set by Congress.

LegalEagle tries to look at DOGE:

(In the Nebula version of the video, closes with the suggestion that it’s a Schrodinger’s cat-like entity, due to the weirdness of the structuring of the executive order establishing it, and the conflicting ambiguities of the public pronouncements about it.)

This should be pretty easy for tech bros to check. His email suggestion will not discover this.

Heaven help the government employee that took a long weekend for PTO.

Yes.

I am seeing public opinion start shifting against Elon and his people as well.

Their attempt at distorting reality is not working as well on the ground.

He still has a thin slice of people who support him (I don’t think they will ever change their minds) but the damage and lack of preparation on the part of DOGE is starting to filter through.

From an FT article. The bolded is bang on.

It just seems like they’re tormenting people for the sake of tormenting them.

I think there is a sizeable segment of the population that disdain civil servants as they view them as privileged. That segment will applaud the pain that Musk inflicts on them regardless of how he does it.

I subscribe to Tangle, which caters to people who want to at least understand what the other side is saying rather than live in their own echo chamber, and this was in today’s, collected from readers/probably subscribers:

A lot of people really like DOGE.

Yes, let’s use response to a single busywork email as a criterion for promotion rather than actual work competence.
