I sometimes enjoy dipping bread in soup. Remember doing it in a restaurant in Spain years ago and hearing some grumbling from the waiter in the background.
This is why I sometimes sop up the gravy with bread. I have never lived under a “clean plate rule”.

You should get the cut-off top with your bread bowl. I don’t think I did the last time I ordered my clam chowda that way.
