That article does not say anything you didnt already say repeatedly and doesnt prove I’m rich any more than you and some others did
I don’t think you are rich just because you live in Manhatten.
I read the article and again I think that the author Richard Reeves is wrongly conflating the concepts of high income and high wealth. The concept of relativity of wealth applies. Most people will answer the question of “what is wealthy” with “more than I have.”
I know a guy who has no job but he has several million dollars in the bank. He lives off of that. He has no income. He’s rich. He pays very little in taxes.
I’m guessing a very large percentge of Americans would say AO fan is rich, whether AO fan believes she is rich or not. I’m guessing that’s true of most actuaries. And I’m betting as a lot we’re probably not indicative of the general public’s views.
i’m not sure what a large percentage of americans would say, but them saying i’m rich doesn’t mean they understand what rich means either.
Is your friend also a data scientist or an aspiring data scientist? We have to squeeze a CAS peg in a DS hole.
I might actually have a friend in this category if you don’t mind sending some info my way, I’ll pass it on.
Although, I can’t remember if he is an FCAS yet or still an ACAS. How much does that matter?
I trust CSPA counts?
Ahhh where can I post about this that it’s on topic though ![]()
My sister is planning to buy an apartment in Manhattan for up to 1.75 million plus up to 2500 per month maintenance. She is rich. I’m not rich in my tiny studio where there are no doors i can even close to get further away from the noise of my neighbors damn kids and their screaming.
Why should any of us start asking that question now?
Could you get your professional nonsense out of our sandbox!? /s
Well, we are not trying to define “rich” as “whatever Americans think is rich.” We’re smarter than that, on average.
That would be akin to letting “the people” define mathematics definitions.
is there an argument that jeff bezos is not rich? because that would be funny
Point noted.
I have read that Elon Musk refers to himself as “cash poor” because while he owns a lot of stuff, he doesn’t generate much cash. Forbes Magazine:
who’s richer, a person living luxuriously with 600k income and zero assets vs a person with 2B in cash but living on the street?
Howard Huges lived in a rundown hotel off the vegas strip. I think he was considered rich at the time.
Was it the Manhatten section of NY, NY casino? If it was, he was definitely rich.
Is your friend rich? That’s all that matters, imo.
how about rich = if you can buy a yacht
well off = if you can rent a yacht
