Copa America 2024

Ref is both COMBEBOL and the DTNF academy

And is that dissent I’m reading??

Should charge $25 more a seat just for spite.

Kevin Ortega, 32, Peru. FIFA international referee since 2019. Good enough to let a pretty clear handball against Uruguay turn into a U.S. advantage that they turn upfield, then blow it dead and bring it back for the handball. :man_facepalming:

– Just saw that apparently he had 7 international games under his belt coming into this game. I get that you have to get experience somewhere, but wow. I can’t imagine UEFA taking a guy with 7 games of international experience and dropping him into say Denmark/Serbia in the final game of the group stage and thinking “this is fine, no problem at all.”

Fortunately, as crap as the ref has been it hasn’t been a deciding factor in the match. Mostly letting them play, and the US is holding their own.

I would not have been surprised if with 5 minutes of extra time, this referee had blown his whistle after 3 minutes. He’d be right at home in the average CONCACAF match.

You understand that UEFA is a much higher quality tournament with a large volume of quality referees?
And Copa is not?

Yes, once he has pulled out the card, he should stop the match.
And it is his prerogative on the advantage call, i.e., there is nothing in the Laws REQUIRING it, but most experts, should you meet one, would play the advantage there.

missing-the-point

Guess who got the yellow?

It was a response to your equating the two tournaments. You think they should act alike. I say they are not alike so don’t expect it.

This seems like a clear offside. Really want a discussion of that review

Adams is standing on the side smiling, with that “yeah I can’t believe this shit either” look.

This has to be all-out attack now.

Fuck.
Unless it went off a USA player, that was wrong, strenuously wrong.

Not the superior UEFA tech, cuz third-rate tourney.

Look, if we pretend a woman is incapable of referring a men’s match [which means ignoring that one is refereeing the Bolivia/Panama game], there’s only 42 men between CONMEBOL and CONCACAF who’ve been licensed at least 7 years who were available to referee an international game. After you filter out the U.S., Uruguay and Bolivia referees, that leaves 35 - and once you ixnay a few others because of potential conflicts, … we’re lucky to have anyone available to referee this competition at all, you can’t possibly expect a competent referee and a competent VAR official in the same match.

Berhalter out pls

I thought a group stage exit would be underachieving enough that Berhalter would be out. I’d bet against it now, even though it should happen.

Officiating aside, it doesn’t matter. USMNT didn’t get the job done, and it wasn’t close. Weah’s dumb red card was disastrous, but this team should have the talent to hold Panama 10-on-11; it didn’t, and it simply does not have the chemistry and/or coaching to come together and compete with the top teams in the world.

2 years to the World Cup. Before this, getting into the round of 16 felt like a certainty and a bare minimum achievement. Now, getting out of the group stage isn’t a given at all and getting out of the round of 32 seems like a real stretch.

Lalas essentially just called for Berhalters job without saying it.

Lalas always defends berhalter.

Gotta go!

Yeah, that was telling. I believe they were up a goal in that match as well.
