Figured a thread on Chinese cars might be useful for political. Sounds like China is starting to push harder on allowing their import to the US, and may have the leverage to force Trump to allow them. I suspect the right invite to his kids to join a Chinese car company will allow it to happen sooner than later.
There is a lot of US resistance to let Chinese companies build cars in the US let alone import them.
The average new car price is 50k. Domestic companies don’t need protection.
Make it t happen.
Ironically, the reason Chinese EVs are several years ahead of ours is because they insisted the western countries build cars for Chinese customers in China. The workers were able to see how they were put together and reverse engineered it. Perhaps the only way for the US to catch up in the near future is to the same in reverse.
There is a precedent for this. The quality of cars made in the US greatly improved after the Japanese car companies were permitted to build there in 1982.
Am curious, but what would happen if you buy a cheap EV in Canada…and simply drive it down to the US to use there.
What kind of taxes could you end up paying?
Assuming it’s street legal each state has its own policies. I almost had to pay sales tax (twice) on my car because I moved states shortly after I bought it. The rule is like, if you bought it less than X days ago you have to pay sales tax when registering it.
So I guess what I’m saying is let it sit in Canada for a bit.
It might not be allowed into the USA.
Googling:
“can you buy a car in canada that is illegal in the USA and drive it to the USA?”
Could be stopped at the border.
As a Canadian citizen, temporarily drive it in and drive it back.
Big thing, not state level but federal:
If you attempt to bring the vehicle into the United States permanently, it must comply with federal regulations or meet specific legal exemptions:
Or, buy it in Canada and wait 25 years.
More “lots of paperwork” FYI:

Virtually impossible. If it’s not a vehicle sold in the US it needs to be 25 years old or more to import.
There was a “gray market” vehicles loophole in the past, but it’s been closed for decades.
