CAS directory question

I was looking for a former colleague in the CAS directory and discovered that she is not listed at all. (no results when I search for her name) I thought that was weird because almost every CAS actuary I know is listed in the directory, even if they are retired or no longer working as an actuary. Anyone know how a name can just disappear? Can you ask to be deleted?

Low-stakes question but I was curious. Thanks

I believe you can ask to be removed from visibility

I just found out a former colleague/boss of mine is listed as “retired” but he’s been dead for 5 years.

Well, the listing technically isn’t incorrect.

Are you sure? I’m retired and was listed until fairly recently, when I decided to let my credentials expire and stop paying dues. Eventually I got a letter stating that I was being removed from the directory for nonpayment. Was your colleague paying dues from the grave, or has something changed recently? I guess we can only speculate.

Well, I found a pic of his tombstone online with his correct date of birth, but I didn’t actually dig him up to verify, but according to the stone, he died in 2020. So yeah, I am pretty sure he’s dead.

My understanding is that in the CAS, if you are “retired” then you have no dues. Can anyone confirm?

LOL I meant are you sure he was listed 5 years after death

The CAS prints obituaries in the Actuarial Review, but someone has to notify the CAS when a member dies. For a well-known member, probably a lot of people tell the CAS right away. For a less well-known member, it may take years.

Maybe the CAS should send out an annual survey: If you are alive, check 1. If you are deceased, check 2.

can’t one of the social security actuaries do us a solid and hook us up with the database

The CAS directory gives actuaries the option to omit their phone and email from public view.

I decided I wanted to speak to a personal auto actuary at XYZ insurance company, and only XYZ. The CAS directory lists XYZ’s credentialed actuaries, but none of them lists their phone or email.

I decided to visit XYZ’s website, call the main number, and ask to speak to someone from the actuarial department. Even after slowly spelling a-c-t-u-a-r-i-a-l, the receptionist could not locate such a department.

I gave up. But XYZ - maybe I had something valuable to say.

Actuarials are a very exclusive bunch!

The receptionist’s job is not to serve as contact information for the actuarial department. Your most likely way to contact is LinkedIn as far as I’m aware. You could possibly show up to a local actuarial event and hope one of them is attending, but that (buttonholing people in public) seems riskier. You could also look at rate filings and hope you see contact info for an actuary, I guess. You could start guessing professional emails (it’s not always that hard). There are various websites that sell contact information for people if you know their names. However, all that stuff might come off looking bad, other than going through LinkedIn.
