Canada <> US

This is a weird one, as all the stories seem to be from outside the US. The investigation can’t have been all that thorough if they know nothing. Good gosh, everything they know seems to be in the headline.

“Accidentally” shot by dad, perhaps?

Deutsche Welle looks at Canadian-US relations with an interesting spin…

Bigger problem on Canadian border is US stuff heading northward.

Very rare for Canadians to poll over 80% on any issue but Trump has united us against buying American products.

If Canada were to join the EU, I believe one of the requirements would be the establishment of a hard border.

I wonder if it could be funded via tariffs imposed by the expanded EU (an approximation of making the US pay for the new wall).

For me, Netflix was easy to ditch. Maybe it’s better in Canada?

I could easily give up my Netflix account

If the US continues to be unfriendly towards Canada this will happen. Canadian defence spending will increase dramatically and those purchases, to the extent possible, will probably be sourced from Europe instead of traditional US sources. Canada will beef up both its Arctic and southern boundaries and greatly reduce its dependence on US military defence.

Russia has a smaller economy than Canada’s. I don’t see Canada ever spending as much of its GDP on the military as Russia but it can afford to spend enough.

No. No it is not.

I am not usually a flag waving kind of guy but found an old Canadian flag to hang from my front porch today in honour of our flag’s 60th birthday. Millions of them are flying today in Canada.

I still have fond memories from grade 10 of the competitions we had for the design for the new flag. My design, a beaver nibbling on a maple tree branch while a moose looks on, obviously didn’t win.

Long may the Maple Leaf fly over an independent Canada!

I did not keep my etchings from 60 years ago but if you Google “moose beaver maple leaf logo” you will see a plethora of similar but better versions of mine.

This one captures current Canadian anger towards US:

I like Mark’s messaging below. I think he has the best chance against Poilievre so would vote for him as Liberal Party leader solely for that reason.

“Alan,

We are at an extraordinary time in our nation’s history – one that tests not just our politics, but our values.

The values that have gotten us through two World Wars, the global financial crisis, questions of national unity, and so much more are the same values we need to stand firm for Canadian interests today: fairness, solidarity, and resilience.

If we stay focused on these values, there isn’t a challenge we can’t overcome.

That’s why it’s important that we celebrate the Canadian flag – a symbol that unites Canadians and reflects these same values. On Flag Day, and every day.

You’re going to hear a lot from Pierre Poilievre today – because the truth is, he’s scared.

Scared that an election he thought would fall into his lap will no longer go according to his plan.

But we have a different plan for Pierre Poilievre, and a different plan for Canada.

A plan for a Canada that leads. A Canada that refuses to be divided, refuses to be diminished, and refuses to be anything less than the best version of itself. The True North Strong and Free.

Canadians need an experienced leader with a positive vision. One that supports our workers, boosts investment, and builds the strongest economy in the G7.

No one who tells you Canada is broken will put Canada first.

I love this country, and together, I know that we can make it even better.

Let’s keep building, together.

PS: If I can count on you to be a part of this campaign, show your support today by committing to vote!

He was a great Bank of England governor. Wish he still was to be honest. Don’t have the same faith in the current incumbent.

Love that he’s not begging for money here, just your vote. Since Citizens United our system forces everyone to constantly raise money for advertising. It’s ridiculous.

Thats a good letter.

Sign of the times…

Trump would have been proud of the US pugilism if he followed hockey.

Have never seen this ugly a start to an international competition featuring the best players in the world. It was very disappointing. Americans seemed to think by starting fights they would deflate a potential strong Canadian start. Sad.

Canada’s two main airlines are cutting flights to the USA as demand drops after Trump’s threats. WestJet passenger load is already down 25%.

Will be interesting to see how much the car and flight passenger numbers drop after March Break: MB reservations are made well in advance and subject to financial penalties if cancelled. New reservations should be down significantly.

Tourist spending is reflected in the service rather than the goods trade numbers so will reduce the US surplus in the service sector: Trump never mentions the US service sector surplus, of course.

Without commenting on whether this game was played differently from others, IMHO hockey has set itself up for this problem with the tolerance of fighting in the sport. What other sport does this (beside boxing and MMAesque crap)?
