Back to thread title, no day 1 tariffs on Canada
Maybe not, but through the magic of the internet that information is readily available. I’ve seen a lot, and I mean a LOT, of memes and Facebook posts comparing prices in October / November 2020 to 2024 along with a pro-Trump message.
A smattering:
Now you can nitpick why, and say it’s not Biden’s fault and I will most likely agree with you. The thing is - and I keep saying it because it’s key - the why doesn’t matter to most undecided voters.
We can all agree that Trump will do jack shit to actually help with anything right?
I thought Canada was gonna buy me eggs
Again, I think we are mostly agreeing here. We can substitute facts for appearances all we want on this one and try to justify which fact is right and which other fact says the voter is wrong. There is too much noise in the starting points due to COVID to use the numbers - they are mostly irrelevant.
When someone sees a large increase in pay but little/no increase in their standard of living, they aren’t happy. In other words, if prices went up 50% over 4 years, I don’t think it matters if wages went up 47% or 53%…the perception of that is all going to be worse than prices going up 10% and wages going up 9% in the same 4 years.
Other than inadvertently… depends.
Say he expands fracking and drilling more than under Biden. That may well lower the price of gas to the detriment of the environment. So whether you view that as good or bad depends on your priorities.
The oft promised tariff bonanza will most definitely hurt most of his base through higher prices.
Without know what the argument was and never having seen either speak before, seconds in I really wanted to punch Poilievre.
His voice has always grated on me. In addition he does not have any nuance in his positions. Unfortunately that is popular with voters.
It’s a preview of what is coming in Canadian politics as I expect Carney to win the leadership race. Personally don’t think he’s the candidate for the moment, but people seem open to give him a shot.
I don’t think there is any candidate “for the moment” given they have to deal with Trump.
In order to counter Trump, we will need to discuss running pipelines across the country (east and west), and refining our own oil. You need a candidate who is perceived as being less stringent on energy regulations, which is certainly not Mark Carney nor Freeland. He’s also not really an outsider despite what he says.
Amazon is shutting down all its Quebec facilities. Union is a dirty word for Jeff Bezos.
This is what you are dealing with…
Trump is viewed as a buffoon by most people outside of the US. He is only tolerated because he is the leader of the most powerful country on Earth. If he were the leader of any other country he could be ignored.
To be fair, he’s viewed as a buffoon by most Americans too. He won less than half the popular vote, and I’m pretty sure that even some of the folks who voted for him realize that he’s a buffoon. But they think he’ll govern the way they want so they overlook the buffoonery.
If he were incompetent / if the government were mostly functioning despite his buffoonery, I’d agree that he’s a buffoon.
However, I think he’s “in control” and has traction. That suggests to me that he might be something worse than a buffoon.
He’s incompetent. Any bad (or good) things on his agenda that he’s actually accomplishing are due to the semi-competent people he has on staff.
He’s a useful idiot for his handlers. Last time it was Mitch McConnell and the religious right who were trying to capture the courts. Mission accomplished.
This time it’s the billionaire boys club who want to destroy the government and take profit where they can, and the religious right who want to build a Christian version of the Taliban. Results pending.
