Looks like someone has a chip on their shoulder.
Many BC Conservatives seem to be farther right than many , but not all, US Republicans.
Saw a big BC Conservative sign on the side of a building with four words on it in giant letters;
Bring Back Plastic Straws
This is what passes as policy for this party.
Voted early on the weekend but not for these guys.
That’s a plastic straw man argument.
Well in fairness there’s a lot of folks out your way who are like that but on the left.
The green party and all their shenanigans, that’s a good example.
Honestly I’d probably vote for the plastic straw party. Paper srtaws are garbage, and doing nothing to fix the problem when cups are plastic…
FWIW, that’s not a Canada<>US thing.
I’ve heard more than a few GOP folks raise that as a political issue. I think Trump has used that as a plank in his platform a time or two.
(I’ll admit that I hate the biodegradable alternatives.)
I do think the plastic straw thing is useless. It provides no meaningful contribution to climate change either way.
Last time I looked, a grotesque portion of the problem are cruise ships.
You could always just drink from the cup… Or Costco’s no straw lid is an option.
I think the problem with straws is more about their waste and/or micro plastics than climate change. It’s kind of similar to disposable plastic bags. The eNGO picture is a turtle or something with a straw lodged in its nose. I’d argue it’s unneeded waste. Except for a few medical conditions, people don’t need straws for their drinks. They just need better lid designs.
Or just carry a reusable metal straw with you and use that. I have one in my office for when I go out to lunch and get a soda.
Agree the straw thing is overblown. From both sides. The problem is not that big, and the solutions are not too burdensome.
I see it as an attempt by industry to blame consumers for an industry driven problem.
My plastic straw in Canada is going to a dump, it’s not a big deal. Work to undue the industry perpetrated myth of plastic recycling if you want to see a real impact on the amount of plastic that ends up in the dump.
Work with Indonesia and the Philippines if you want to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean.
Indonesia, the Phillipines, and Malaysia are where western countries dump a lot of their plastic for “recycling”. If we reduce our plastic waste, that reduces the amount of improperly disposed of plastic waste in Indonesia, the Phillipines, and Malaysia.
My plastic waste in Canada has a decent shot of ending up in the ocean. St. John's students clean up 'despicable' amount of garbage on Sugarloaf path | CBC News
Not sure what you mean by undo the myth of plastic recycling. My understanding is that a lot of it just isn’t recyclable. Or are you saying we should just remove the recycling logo from those plastic items that aren’t actually recyclable so consumers aren’t being fooled?
The myth is that plastic is ok if you toss it in that separate bin that goes into the magical dump truck that picks up recylcleables.
Some of that bin gets recycled, but lots of it ends up in the landfill, or on a ship going to another country where it might end up in the landfill there, or in ocean in the middle of the pacific.
We are a wasteful culture in the US. Lots of packaging to make things convenient and easy to transport. Single stream recycling to make us all feel better, but trash ends up in that system.
My municipality switched waste disposal companies to one that asked us to split up recycling to separate out the paper stuff, and glass became a drop off item. People revolted. Now we pay 3x what we did before to have single stream again.
I see neighbors throwing out things all the time that would be gone to a good home in less than an hour for $1 on facebook marketplace.
Banning plastic straws was one of the first attack lines the GOP rolled out against Harris, before they regrouped and focused on immigration.
I found it amusing. The GOP was unclear how to attack Harris. Other than straws, they basically only had “she’s a Black woman”.
I’m not sure “amusing” is the adjective I’d use.
“Sad”, “tragic”, and “typical” come to mind.
BF and I had some interesting straws when we went out a few days ago. I assume some sort of corn-based product. More textured than a regular plastic straw but a lot more durable than a paper straw and not as bulky as a pasta straw.
I do find paper straws annoying. I wouldn’t form a political party over it or anything.
IIRC the no straw lid contains more plastic than a traditional lid + plastic straw.
Lol, this right there. The impact o. Me is effectively zero.
Maybe, I don’t know.
