Canada <> US

This is the first time in the past decade that I would feel comfortable going back to China. The relationship with Canada has been so bad in recent years.

Just a comment that I’m loving all the videos and memes coming out of the curling controversy.

Wow, Carney calls the Trump bluff. Canadian oil is now heading to Amsterdam.
So much for that strategic plan where the USA “gets the western hemisphere.” The US auto business model is toast.i firmly believe the future is all about two key resources:energy and water. Oils is energy, and the US does not have energy self sufficiency, it imported Canadian Oil. Venezuela will not plug the hole.

I’m doubling down on my prior strategy, Short the U$D. Pax Americana is dead. Canada will find willing, global buyers for its lumber and energy. Completely unclear where the US will find other suppliers. Expect increased shipping infrastructure in both Vancouver and Halifax to support the new supply chains.

Well, it was a helluva run. Now we watch the cost of US debt climb. A new fed chair can’t overcome this political insanity.

How are you defining this? My understanding is that we produce more energy than we consume, it is just in the wrong format for consumption. So we export natural gas and import oil.

Don’t you import a bunch of Canadian natural gas?

US became a net exporter of energy in 2020:

On an energy content basis, even though U.S. total energy imports increased by about 1% in 2023, U.S. total energy exports were the highest on record, at about 29.50 quadrillion British thermal units (quads), and increased by about 8% from 2022. Total energy exports exceeded total energy imports by about 7.80 quads, the largest annual margin on record.

Heavy vs light crude. The oil refineries in TX and LA need heavy, which we currently import from Canada. We export natural gas and light crude.

And y’all may be aware of the conversations surrounding data centers and their large energy appetites. We apparently need lots more electricity.

Stats about the past…great planning. /s

we need to just stop the nonsense and get onboard with nuclear and renewables.

Link?

I think this will happen gradually but has there been a new development?

14? Is that called a Politician’s Dozen? Or maybe a Boondoggle Dozen. We need a name for this.

No breaking news. And that is kinda the problem. No Discussions with the Trump admin? Silence is a very bad sign.

I recall that strategic security document (basically from the Heritage Foundtion), which outlined the US goal to be the ruler of the western hemisphere. That’s going to be tough without dialogue. I can only speculate that Carney is working on a plan B and C, he has a lot of options. The fact that he is silent is pretty ominous, at least on this side of the border.

I’m guessing that Carney feels the odds of getting a reasonable new trade deal with the US are almost nil and/or Trump will just levy tariffs whenever the mood suits him even if there is a trade agreement.

His strategy has to be closer ties with other countries.

Let’s bear in mind that Mark Carney was Governor of the Bank of England. Donald Trump went bankrupt owning a casino.
It’s really not a very fair fight, truth be told.

…and Bank of Canada

During the 2008 crisis. No Canadian bank bailouts were required.

Oh, I did not know that.

Can I worship this guy any harder? Or as I say to my kids, if you love him so much why don’t you just marry him?

This is what a Canadian populist looks like.

And why Doug Ford stays in power.

He’s definitely populist.

At the same time, whats wrong with this? Nothing really. It’s just that typical politicians wouldn’t do it.

Similarly, in ontario, all beer used to have to be sold through a single retailer that was owned by the top three brewers. He broke the back of that agreement and now we can get beer in corner stores. That beer store thing has rankled me for decades.

Ford has problems, but he does stuff people actually want. Calling it populist could be a bit dismissive of the fact he’s accomplishing some stuff that people want done.
