culture hard at work there
High schools are usually bins of kids of relative economic status. Not everyone, of course, but they aren’t usually very diverse. Many schools may have zero racial diversity. My school has black and white kids, and a few others that made up the other 2% of the class.
Assuming you went to a NY high school, you likely had much more culture and diversity and viewpoints around you. Not many places in the US are like that.
Colleges aren’t great places for culture either. You create bins of kids of relative economic status, with a few poorer smart kids from maybe a different culture, and from a wider geographic spread. They are better than high school, but barely.
4 years of community College while working a different part time jobo or volunteering in a different community every 6 months in your nearest metro area while living on their own probably makes better adults for much less money.
So you aren’t really disagreeing with me.
Life generally isn’t great for culture unless you already live in a diverse area or actively seek it out. Plenty of people never see another person of a different race in their life. And this doesn’t just apply to the po’s of America.
It seems like college age is better for these kinds of experiences. High school is too immature still. Granted, it would be even better if college were a few years later than it is - 18 year olds are still idiots.
Less structure and more freedom over your time in college also makes it a significantly different experience than high school.
OK, back to Biden’s Socialist communist takeover. (I will find the culprit of this tangent and call them out when I get a chance.)
Why can’t he just give money and contracts to Military companies or to rich people, like he’s supposed to?
Wait… he is. Instead of people paying off loans, Biden is paying an amount for them.
Guess who made those loans and/or by whom they are backed (Ride, SallyMae Ride)? Yup, rich people.
You’re welcome, rich people.
My solution is the “Northern Exposure Deal.”
“We’ll pay your college, but you’ll work for us for X years paying it off.” And whoever is making that deal will make sure it’s a worthy risk.
If the Federal Government makes this deal, and the student fails, welcome to the Military! The Reverse GI Bill.
enough of an experience that benefits society that we should have our tax dollars pay for kids to live on campus and party it up?
No. I like the “make student loans dischargeable through bankruptcy and make lenders underwrite”. There are some kinks to work out, but get the government out of it.
Huh? I mean maybe some people in the third world, but in the US?
aren’t there lots of towns with like 100% white? and lots of people also never leave their hometown.
and I was being hyperbolic of course
There aren’t all that many, but I could certainly see there being communities where someone could count on one hand the number of people of another race that they have met in person.
The most common race they would have met at this point in time would probably be hispanic (which I guess isn’t really a “race”)
I guess i am disagreeing that high school can provide what college alleges it can provide regarding culture, mostly because they both usually suck at doing that for the vast majority of students.
So i guess i agreed with you in a twig sort of way.
Sure, but that’s radically different from the number being 0.
I’ve been in (geographically large) communities where >99% of the population are the same race. But to never even see someone of a different race seems pretty extreme.
I didn’t realize JSM was being hyperbolic. My sarcasm detector has a weak sensor, I guess.
In these communities, the 1% is usually treated as zoo animals, rather than as human beings.
And I say this as someone who grew up in Asia, and I know how white and black people were/are treated there. People would literally point at you and murmur amongst their group.
There’s very little cultural exchange to speak of, even in the presence of a different race.
Times have changed, I hope. Haven’t been back for a while.
Diversity really drops to zero outside of major cities. You may see a minority at the store a few times a year and if you are lucky when you are a kid, your parents take you on vacation somewhere diversity exists. If you are really lucky, your parents even point them out to you when you see them!
This was my hometown up until high school
Highly dependent on the persons involved and how comfortable the minority person feels in representing their culture, and how others choose to treat that person, in my experience.
But yeah, overall not a ton. I just took issue with your literal statement, which I didn’t read as hyperbole.
and I expect nothing less!
I suppose if you’re trying to acquire “culture” . . . it could take that long . . .
That would be a lot of paintball…
