Annoyed Thoughts

Trash pickup day. We pay an extra $5 a month or something to have “large items” picked up on the 1st pickup of the month. They require extra payment for very large things like a fridge, but we had a few smaller things like a sliding screen door to throw away. And particularly, a small piece of wooden Wayfair furniture held together with wooden pins and dreams.

Placed our few things leaning against the trash can to clearly indicate “this isn’t randomly in our lawn, please throw away.”

Trash guy comes through. Uses the truck arm to push our cabinet over, which smashes onto the road. Little screws and wooden pins and brackets go everywhere in our cul-de-sac where kids sometimes run around barefoot.

Further knocks over our trash can with the arm. Styrofoam goes everywhere, thankfully 95% of it very intact so it didn’t blow around everywhere immediately. A lot of the other trash that wasn’t specifically bagged (which isn’t required) goes into the lawn.

Guy picks up the largest pieces of the smashed cabinet and throws it into the bucket, leaving screws and splinters and even hand-sized pieces of wood all around. Had to go clean it up before a kid got a screw in their foot. Most of the trash was actually knocked into my neighbor’s lawn (we place our cans side-by-side between us), so I made sure to clean their lawn thoroughly.

In communist canada we get that done once a month for ‘free’.

I do too, it is a city by city, sometimes even town by town thing

I bought some jalapeno lime hot sauce yesterday thinking it sounded like it would be good on tacos. It sucks. It has an overwhelming citric acid taste that I find off-putting.

Here it is suburb by suburb. Most of the “nicer” suburbs are their own cities and pay the trash collection company directly for trash pickup from property tax revenue. Kinda nice as that makes it tax deductible and one less bill to worry about.

The most expensive suburb pays extra (I’m really curious how much extra they pay) so that they don’t have to drag their cans to the end of their driveways and no one ever sees the trash cans. The trash company sends their employees down the driveway to retrieve the cans, drag them to the street, empty them into the truck, and drag them back to the house. A bit over the top… it’s not really all that much work to drag the cans to the end of the driveway now that they’re on wheels. Nor is it that offensive to see the cans at the edge of the street on trash night. :woman_shrugging:

We also get free healthcare, so that’s nice.

My prior neighborhood, they came behind the house to get the cans; here I have to bring it to the curb

Prior I needed special pick-up for any large items, even Black Leaf bags; here only call for mattresses and large electronics and the regular guys seem to take it anyway.

Have never been charged though

You mean I’ve been hauling my recycling and garbage to the end of the driveway like some sort of chump???

Yep, you need to move to a posher part of town!

Luau tonight at 5:00, open seating. My wife at 2:00: “we need to get there early so we can get good seats and find drinks etc. I don’t want to be stuck in the back row.”

My wife at 4:50: “Will you be ready to go when I am?”

I got an alert this morning that my SSN is on the dark web. Thankfully, I’d frozen my credit with all 3 credit reporting agencies years ago. I just set up fraud alerts, too. Now debating blocking electronic access through the SSA. Has anyone done that?

To be frank, I’d be surprised if your ssn wasnt already on the dark web

I’ve not heard of this. Does it mean that you can’t access your SSA account (view earnings summaries and such) via the internet?
