I guess the difference was in my day, we wouldn’t dare suggest to somebody to backtrack to pick us up before taking us all on a long drive. But I did grow up before helicopter parenting.
Sorry i meant to say you cant’ make me stop complaining lol. Youre sort of a captive audience.
the perks of being an admin, amirite??!?
Playing Euchre against computers.
My partner was dealer. Ended up with a stick the dealer situation, partner picked spades.
Turns out the opponent to my right had four spades, including the Benny, right, AND left. Guaranteed win. Why on earth would they pass?! Glitch in the algorithm maybe.
I wouldn’t have had the audacity. Asking someone to be inconvenienced like that makes me feel ill.
@SpaceLobster : You need to get Claude under wraps. I don’t wanna see any actuarials get scammed outta their lunch money!!
Very basic glitch to have missed that.
What’s a “Benny”?
It’s a Joker that is added to the deck that is always top Trump. It’s a British variant of the game.
I was rooting around in the utensil drawer when my sweet, innocent fingers got jabbed by a mandolin insert that fell out of its box. It hurtied and there was blood. Wah. ![]()
2 > 1.
But getting through 2 other players to stick the dealer, AND hope dealer chooses clubs or spades…
Did it also have a red jack, thus increasing the probability of sticking the dealer?
But in this case “a bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bush” given the odds of getting the two.
Never heard of it! My parents taught my brother and I Euchre probably 40 years ago, and have played many times since. Feels like it’s complex enough with a right and left shenanigans without adding another one.
It’s not how I play IRL, but I like how it mixes things up when I’m playing against the computer.
You had to know how to play euchre in the farming community grew up in as it was always played at family gatherings. The version I learned 60+ years ago was the same as you learned. However the version with the joker added started getting popular there about 20 years ago. I prefer the original version.
Lol, FYI, they’re still playing Euchre back in that area. I learned it growing up too. I’m headed home this weekend, and I could connect with some euchre games if I wanted. Which, I do not because the mudpout are running so I’m goin’ fishing.
I love Euchre. Great memories of playing this endlessly in college with a few friends and drinking really bad beer.
I also love Euchre. usually play on phone now and not w real people (i aspire to make that happen again).
does this proposed variant have a name: if a Jack is the flipped card, if the dealer picks it up they can declare that suit or the other same-colored suit trump? I’d have to play it a bunch of times to see how it shakes out, but I’d be curious how it changes things
Like “pick up the left” kind of thing? I’ve wondered about that before. Make it a house rule!
In the version of “British euchre” that we play, the highest card is the 2 of spades followed by the joker and then the two bowers. If you turn up a jack you can declare either suit of that colour to be trump.
We drop the 9s out of the deck. The strategy is very different as the bowers are so diminished in status.
