Aging (and shrinking) populations

why

I am three years older than her.

Retire at 66 and cover her via COBRA. Or retire whenever you want and cover her with Obamacare.

I get that, but I prefer the group coverage

Cobra will allow for your coverage to be exactly the same

At a much higher premium after six months or so.

Huh?

I thought it was just the employer + employee portions of the premium, but the premium itself was constant.

and then like 5% higher (they charge a vig).

company plan might require retired individuals who are medicare eligible to get that first. so then you are medicare for self and cobra single plan for spouse (in our example).

Right, that’s what I was envisioning. I assume it’s allowed to continue the employer plan on top of Medicare but that’s presumably not worth doing.

I don’t know what this is.

Really…

You have never heard the term for gambling?

They are allowed to charge up to an 2% extra for the additional admin fee associated with providing benefits to a separated party so 102% max

Most people have never looked at their w2 to ascertain the actual cost of their health insurance but will be quick to say “I’m working until I am eligible for Medicare because the cost of health insurance is insane”

When in reality your income in retirement will most likely be low enough to qualify for insurance subsidies. This will be even easier for those retiring close to Medicare eligible age to game the system for a year or two to get those sweet sweet subsidies they have been contributing towards funding for others for years

I learned from watching mob movies

No… I don’t gamble. :woman_shrugging:

Hmmm… I’ve probably made about the same number of trips to a blackjack table as I’ve seen mob movies. Which is not zero, but certainly single digits.

Low single digits.

This is not a movie but watching the Sopranos really sucked me into a mob movie rabbit hole

You’re missing out on Hollywood mob movies!

That’s one I never watched.

As for gangster movies… I saw The Godfather. (The original)

American Gangster
The Family (won free tix when it was in the theater)
Chinatown (I really only remember “she’s my sister and my daughter”)

Uh… does The Whole Nine Yards count?

I might have seen the second Godfather, come to think of it.

You are welcome
