Actuarial Chess Club

RN.

My bullet and blitz ratings are 933 and 989, respectively.

Happy to say I finally crossed 1200 on blitz today

I think this is why I struggle so much against you. We have very similar repertoires, but I haven’t played classical in decades

I just created a general tournament for everyone to join. I know there was some demand for a no-vacation “just for fun” tournament and I said I’d create one for the middle of this season of the more ‘official’ GoA tournament.

It will be large groups, so up to 11 games at a time depending on how many people join. No rating requirements or separation. 3 days per move. No vacation. Just for fun!

Join here: Login - Chess.com

I also sent an invite out on chess dot com. Tentative start date on May 22.

@justrick6 @Italian_Halibut @J0EBL0W I made an announcement on chess dot com about a big tournament if y’all were interested in joining. Tentative start date 5/22. All the details are in the announcement.

I can’t wait to get destroyed in the tournament!

You’re 6-0 against me. Sad for you (and me I guess) I won’t have time to play in this one. Good luck!

Group A has not finished yet (4th place yet to be determined), but the Top 3 is set in stone.

Congratulations to the following winners:

Group A:
1st - staples13
2nd - Blampman
3rd - Minnesotah

Group B:
1st: actuaryman (@JonasChess)
2nd: elai4203
3rd: @justrick6

Group C:
1st: AveMaria77
2nd: crinttae
3rd: @J0EBL0W

Group D:
1st: fingersfelder (@Eagles)
2nd: sethclaw10 (@sethascope)
3rd: @randolphdupree33

As many of you all know, the Big Actuarial Tourney is currently going on. I anticipate it will be quite some time until we resume the tiered tournaments. Maybe by then @IPD will be able to join us.

Famous chess player/streamer WGM Dina Belenkaya (she also commentates and interviews in big tournaments like the Candidates) visited our local bar in DC last night to play some blitz chess (5 min flat) while streaming. I was second to play and had the white pieces, so as you all know I went 1.e4. She responded with the Caro Kann (1. c6) followed by 2. d4, 2. d5, 3. exd5, 3. cxd5, 4. c4 (Panov Attack) 4. Nf6 5. Nf3, 5. Nc6, 6. Nc3, 6. Bb4, 7. h3, 7. Bxf3, and so on. She kept asking me questions like: How long have you been in DC for? What do you do for work? What’s an actuary? What in insurance? Nerves definitely got to me and the game felt like a blur, and I just a blundered a bishop for no reason, so I was down a piece and 2 pawns. But thanks to her blundering herself and all that work from solving tactics on chess dot com, I was able to negate her battery on the c-file with pins and defended well, and managed to win a piece back. Her response: “that’s not very nice”. Later in the game I was able to trade off queens so I could remove checkmate threats to my vulnerable king. “Hey I don’t like that.” With my king, rook, and 2 pawns against her king, rook, and 3 or 4 pawns, she told me “You know I’m just flag you now”, and yup, I lost on time. It was obviously a losing position, but I still would’ve liked another 30 seconds or so I could make her earn the win with her pawn advantage.

Immediately after the game, she told me even though I blundered the piece in the middle game, she screwed up or miscalculated something, and I was somewhat able to comeback. All that solving puzzles/puzzle rush and playing 3 min 2 sec increment with @MayanActuary helped make me not look like a complete embarrassment in front of her Twitch chat. She also played 2 games with an IM, and that was definitely must watch TV. In the first game (Caro Kann) he was about to set up eventual checkmate by moving the white queen to the 7th rank, but he moved the queen to the wrong square and she claimed a win via illegal move. It was funny because she called for an arbiter when there wasn’t one. In the 2nd game (@IPD’s favorite Closed Sicilian), he revealed to her that he was actually an IM. The 2nd game he just crushed her.

Attached are 2 screenshots of her reposting my IG stories into her IG. First one is of me, and the second one is of her and IM Oladapo Adu. Felt blessed getting to see so much chess talent in person.

What an awesome experience! I have occasionally watched her streams / commentary on events. Super cool.

I was able to find the stream. I took a picture of how the position looked like at the end of the game.

The comments in the chat were mainly about: “he makes bank”, “He’s an actuary for the NSA/FBI”, “Go squirrels”, “Next learn the 5 love languages”, He’s a savage", “Good with numbers but bad with clocks”, “Poor guy’s nervous and down on time”, “DIRTY FLAGGING”, and even one person who called me cute

The video is available (called Chess on Tap) and I’m on like the 18th minute or so if anyone wants to watch the game. Just do me a favor and skip the part where I’m struggling with putting the mic on

Edit: I set up the position on chess dot com analysis and eval bar has the advantage as -1.7 for black. Which is winning, but not completely winning like I had initially thought.

Does anyone else notice in their daily games that if you win/lose, you’re set to gain/lose 100s of rating points? Dont get me wrong, I want to break 1600 and even 1700 in Daily, but not like this…

Seasplash, how many games do you have? I bet that you’re still provisional. When you are provisional your rating is just a weighted average of game performance ratings. Your performance rating for a game is opponent’s rating plus 400 if you win, equal to opponent rating for a draw and opponent rating minus 400 for a loss. Once you have 20 or so rated games on the platform you’ll have an established rating and the most it will move from a single game will be 32 points.

Highly doubt my rating is provisional. I’ve played 771 Daily games to date, and my guess is the # of rated daily games (excluding 960) I’ve played is over 400.

I’m looking at recent games from the Actuarial tourney, and there was a game against @MayanActuary in which I won. My rating went up 9 points from 1572 to 1581.

So that’s a very recent phenom then?

I’m beginning to think it’s a bug. I haven’t actually won or lost a game recently, so I don’t know if that is the actual rating change that will happen.

Can you check how many rating points you’re set to gain/lose in your current game against acroyogagenie?

I’m not seeing how to find expected rating change. I know that I’ve seen it before but am not finding it now.

When you’re in the game, click on Info (should be between “Chat” and “Notes”). From there, click “Rating Adjustment”

That is odd; win: 254 draw 80, loss: -94

BTW: I was able to find this info on the desktop but not on the app.
