As you say, ProPublica is quite reliable and while it’s rated online as “skews left”, it’s no Daily Beast.

I’d love to see any connections between the police and white supremacists revealed.

Canada is the 51st state, America is going to take over Greenland, America is going to liberate Great Britain, let’s leave NATO, let’s blow up our trade agreements and slap up tariffs.

This can only go well.

Putin could not have written it better.

Labour got into power in July 2024 after about 15 years not being in power. It’s obvious Musk’s accusations are not true and it’s not even clear why Musk is doing what he is doing but I think Starmer sees it as a regime change agenda. What does he even mean by talking about freeing UK? The UK isn’t USA and some language can be interpreted as treasonous. If Musk isn’t careful he will find out soon enough.

This phrase came to mind unbidden this morning:

Then I thought about, we’ve currently threatened to liberate the UK from its “tyrannical” government, use military force on Greenland and Panama, and forcibly annex Canada with economic pressure.

I browsed an /r/Republican thread with the topic complaining about Trump’s threats. The comments are aggressively pro-annexation. I am not the only one who believes /r/Republican to have a heavy presence of bots and foreign trolls, but it’s the same messaging that goes out to all MAGA on Facebook, Truth Social, etc.

Gulf of America!

Consider the reasons why he talks about this stuff. For example, he is magnifying the importance of Greenland. What happens now if China starts trying to buy up large pieces of Greenland like they are doing with Panama? Trump says “See, what did I tell you?” At the end of this he wants our allies to spend more money on their military, and he wants to stop the flow of illegal aliens and drugs. All of these strategies serve that end.

I find it endlessly entertaining.

Gulf of America :rofl::rofl: The endless trolling is so funny to me

Former U.S. President Harry Truman wanted to annex Greenland from Denmark at the end of World War II for $100 million in 1947 U.S. dollars. The offer was rejected by Denmark, but the U.S. military still has a military base there. It’s not crazy talk, like Afghanistan, Greenland has gigantic mineral value. Biden made a huge mistake not keeping parts of Afghanistan under U.S. military control just for the mineral rights, but that moron blew it with the disastrous 2021 withdrawal. Having Greenland an ally to the U.S. regardless what it’s status is very important, if it becomes independent nobody wants it becoming a Euro-coward part of the EU and anti U.S.

idk why its a bad idea to aquire Greenland. I think its quite good what hes doing and hes probably going to succeed via negotiations. Idk why people fear aquiring territories. The US has a lot of interests in the world which generates as equal amount of enemies like China.

He does not need to stop. Imo he wants Greenland to lease some land to the US, just by saying he wants to purchase Greenland, Greenland has decided it wants to separate from Denmark. I think it’s a great start to accomplish that. Panama rips the US off and we’re the country that built and paid for the canal and provides maintenance money as well. Panama shouldn’t rip the US off, it’s ok he says it out loud, it’s kind of his job to protect the US in every way including financially. As for Canada, their leader was so weak he decided to resign because that’s what snowflakes do. Additionally he says a lot to simply trigger libs, that way they focus on bullshit while he’s negotiating real things for the US :united_states::two_hearts:

He’s talking about purchasing Greenland and the Greenland president is down with it. Greenland is rich in resources!

As a Canadian, he should take over Canada

Oh hey, we’re getting toward “Actually most Canadians/Greenlanders want to join America”.

Except, no: Greenland says despite Trump’s threats and son’s visit, they aren’t for sale - National | Globalnews.ca

What’s really terrible is this is the exact thing Russia was accused of doing with Ukraine, needlessly menacing other sovereign states. USA has been underinvesting in diplomacy and overinvesting in its military for the last few decades so we are forgetting simple things like no one likes bullies.

This reminds me of the relationship advice I got when I was still learning relationships. It was basically the reason you treat a lady nicely is so that she comes back tomorrow and picks up your calls.

When we then discuss not giving the world cup to country A because it is bad for the climate it really makes me mad.

Did this happen?

The opposition to Saudi Arabia as a host includes such discussions. There was an argument that the impact of the building that will be done has a massive climate impact.

Maybe they can incorporate the new buildings into The Line. Haven’t heard anything about that lately.

As of October 2024, Saudi Arabia intends to complete a 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) central segment of The Line by 2030

For me, it’s not so much that building for an event has a climate impact as the effect of building expensive structures for a single use. It’s not just current criticism about the Saudis and Qatar. Brazil also had to build essentially one use facilities in a country that is crazy about soccer. This makes no sense unless massive suitcases of cash are involved.

Much less about HOW they were built: essentially by slaves.

Holy cow, that sounds perfectly awful!

Ahead of multiple Trump cases with potential to be seen by the Supreme Court, Supreme Court Justice Alito is personally asking a favor of Trump.

After several years of bad relations, China has expressed interest in resuming talks on a trade agreement with Canada. As much as Canada values its economic relationship with the US, Trump’s economic war on Canada may force us into closer economic ties with Beijing. One perverse consequence of current American policy.

Canada may undo its tariffs on Chinese EVs. BYD has just reduced the price of the Dolphin in Australia to $US18,700. Could be a game changer.

There are hints that they will soon release the smaller Seagull there, which will be even cheaper.
