Mike Johnson has effectively killed the House Ethics board.
I made the mistake of perusing a celebration of Dear Leaderâs 100 days on Nextdoor (apparently the local mods are asleep at the wheel; they usually do a better job of purging non-local politics).
After US election night in November, I reached the conclusion that the US is effed â not by Dear Leder, per se, but by the mentality of the people that put him back in office. What Iâve seen since, reinforced by the trainwreck of the local discussion I should have known to avoid, hasnât swayed me from that conclusion.
Best that I can do is pop some more popcorn, continue lounging in my gaming chair, watch the train wreck in progress, and keep an eye out for ways to profit and avoid rising to direct notice by the authorities.
So many people dismiss everything as âOrange man badâ. The Libertarians are obnoxious. Taxes for the roads you donât drive on is theft.
But that is exactly what Trump wants all the dissenters to do. Guarantees that his agenda proceeds.
Just to be clear⌠the feeling of America being effed is specifically a reaction to citizens willingly voting into office an individual whose disrespect for the rule of law is objectively undeniable.
Yours is a fair criticism of libertariansâŚand part of the reason why I have to put qualifies on when I use the label. In the before times, despite my inner libertarianâs cynicism towards American politics, I at least took faith that there were enough office-holders in place who generally tried to act in what they thought was the best interest of the country, for hope not to be lost (at least probably not within my lifetime).
Generally, I believe that when politicians act in the best interest of the country, they canât go too far wrong, even if I disagree with their opinions.
However, the 24 elections pretty much dashed that hope in my mind. I think the philosophy is still good, but at this point the folks in charge are prioritizing other interests at the expense of the country.
I think itâs more accurate to think of it as being âwhat the folks capitalizing on Trumpâs presidency wantâ. Your phrasing gives the Dear Leader too much credit.
I see your point, and I donât disagree in principle.
However, I have my hands plenty full satisfying my primary temporal duty of taking care of my family. If/when enough leopards have eaten enough faces that the teachable are taught, the risk/reward ratio will have changed enough to revise my stance.
Until then, I do what I must to prepare to survive with my alleged sanity and conscience intact.
(Besides, the last time the ancestors I most closely identify with dissented against Washington, it didnât turn out so well; the term âattempted genocideâ comes to mind. But hey, we eventually got permission to open a small casino.)
Why we are where we are.
Depressing article.
A good universal education system is our best hope for the future. While we have the best private schools in the world our public education system is underfunded with poorer outcomes than many other developed countries. No sign that is about to change.
