A Reminder of where America is heading

They have been doing that for 30 years on guns with the Dickey amendment.

ā€œOur records show that there’s been no climate change in the last few years. Actually, we no longer have records. Yay, climate change is solved!ā€

The lab where the people who collect data for the Keeling curve has been closed

Man I’m really scared about who comes after him. Hopefully not that psycho Navarro.

Perhaps less important than who the next Fed chairman is, will the Fed continue to be independent? Trump has wanted the Fed chair to take guidance from him.

Here’s an article from last summer that has some interesting observations:
https://www.rabobank.com/knowledge/d011432253-trump-and-allies-plan-to-overhaul-the-fed

If the second Trump administration puts their plan into action, markets are likely to respond with higher longer-term interest rates because of higher inflation expectations. This response could put pressure on Congress and the Trump administration to maintain the Fed’s independence.

I hope somebody has explained this to Trump in words that he can understand.

If someone did so, wouldn’t there be a risk of that someone being sent to the Salvadoran gulag?

Tonight is the 250th anniversary of Paul Revere’s ride.

Apparently there was a message at the Old North Church last night.

A prelude to violating some human rights. Reminds me of ā€œenhanced interrogationā€ used to justify torture.

The US is literally no longer promoting free elections in other countries.

Is it promoting them within the US?

It hasn’t for several years, really.

I think it varies a lot by state. Several states have made it much easier by doing mail ballots, expanded hours and more polling locations. Other states have gone the other direction, closing polling stations in the busiest cities, purging voter roles at the last minute etc.

When you have a mish-mash of economic and political incompetence operating with no real accountability, you end up with the chaos that we are seeing today in the US.

All the little petty authoritarians that have always existed in the US (Pro-Israel crazies, Anti-Science crazies, Anti-Abortion crazies, Anti-immigration crazies, Pro-Religion crazies, Anti-Education crazies etc) are all trying to desperately extract their pound of flesh via the incompetent and disorganised Trump administration.

Here is the latest round of complete incompetence:

I like the claim that a) it was a mistake, but b) Harvard totally exaggerated, even though they posted the actual letter so we know they didn’t, and c) the admin doubled down with the funding freeze and IRS investigation.

I think you mean ā€œAntiā€.

Yes. Have fixed.

Long read. But a very interesting essay by a Canadian writer that has covered the US for decades.

There is some sadness mixed in with the anger that Canadians now feel towards the USA.
