A Reminder of where America is heading

I’m wondering when we see the first sovereign nation eject a US military base from their country. Prolly start slowly, with A erican military personnel being detained as illegal aliens should they leave the base.

Long ago, an accord was reached- Bretton Woods. In that agreement the US would encourage and protect free trade (basically a Navy), the U$D would be the worlds currency reserve, and the US would establish military bases around the world.

Under this administration, the State Department has stopped publishing lists of countries that have a problem with sexual violence against women, and ceased many other programs that protect people around the world. So now it is time to use soft power to :checks notes: oppose laws against hate speech.

But a senior Washington figure, who has provided advice for the administration, claimed he is “obsessed by the fall of Western civilisation” – including his view that free speech is being eroded in Britain – and that he will demand the Labour government rolls back laws against hateful comments, including abuse targeting LGBT+ groups or other minorities, as a condition of any deal.

The Independent was told: “The vice-president expressing optimism [on a trade deal] is a way of putting further pressure on the UK over free speech. If a deal does not go through, it makes Labour look bad.”

That’s already happened. I forget the details, but we were kicked out of an African country in the past couple of years, and one of the central Asian former Soviet republics 10-or-so years ago.

Thirty-eight of 43 experts cut last month from the boards that review the science and research that happens in laboratories at the National Institutes of Health are female, Black or Hispanic, according to an analysis by the chairs of a dozen of the boards.

But remember, MAGA is not racist or sexist.

There isn’t any racism in the U.S. it’s all in the past. /s

We barely have free speech here.

There was a great press conference a few months ago where Trump said about firing Powell and a reporter asked JP if he planned to quit and he gave a very unambiguous no. My money is on JP finishing his term. The Fed is big boy economics and the Senate republicans have little patience for Trumponomics.

I am not so sure the second part is true. There has been a little bit of griping from Senate Republicans, but most seem to be of the mind to shut up and let Trump have as much time as he needs on the economy. I’m guessing the markets would tank if Trump fired Powell before his term is up, which might motivate a few of them.

Like you, I’d bet on Powell finishing his term but that’s solely due to fear of a market collapse. I don’t see Senate republicans suddenly growing a spine.

I agree, especially if the timing were a surprise. Somebody with some inside information could make a lot of money in 48 hours.

Don’t give MTG more ideas.

Zuckerberg joins fellow tech billionaires in purchasing a home in the nation’s capital. Jeff Bezos, Eric Schmidt, Peter Thiel, and David Sacks all now have multi-million dollar mansions in Washington, D.C. Thiel’s home is even in the same neighborhood as Zuckerberg’s new one. The Meta CEO’s new house is a 12-minute drive to the White House.

Billionaires own multiple houses. Oligarchs should have one in the capital city.

I thought oligarchs were supposed to own dachas in the same complex as the leader of their group.

I don’t think Trump can fire JP though, only the Senate?

He wasn’t supposed to be able to get rid of the FTC but he did it anyway
